Throwback: The last teenager to score a CL debut hat-trick?

Heads were turned this week as Red Bull Salzburg’s teenage sensation, Erling Braut Haland scored a hat-trick on his Champions League debut.

The Norwegian striker now has 17 goals in all competitions already this season, marking him as one to watch for the future and apparently, the present, too. Braut Haland is only the third teenager to ever score a hat-trick on their Champions League debut, but who was the last one to do? That would be Wayne Rooney.

The Manchester United and England legend scored his first three goals for United in a Champions League group game against Fenerbahce. Coming off the back of Euro 2004, a tournament he took by storm before limping out injured in the quarter-final, Rooney had to wait until fully fit again to make his debut for his new club. But when he did, it was well worth the short wait.

Rooney went on to become Manchester United and England’s all-time record goalscorer and is still playing today in MLS. At 19-years-old, he was once the hotly tipped teenager that Erling Braut Haland is now.
