Throwback: One of the Premier League’s greatest ever goals…

On this day in 1992, the Premier League was a mere baby.

The recently born, rebranded English top-flight was already proving to be popular, and with goals like this in it’s earliest years, it’s not hard to see why. Thanks to satellite TV, pictures of the late-Dalian Atkinson’s wonder goal were beamed across the world.

The former Aston Villa striker who sadly passed away in 2016, is immortalised thanks to much-loved and cherished footage of early Premier Leagues games such as this one that saw Villa take on Wimbledon. A rainy autumnal day, it was a perfect setting for this legendary goal that would on to win the 1993 Goal of the Season title.

Atkinson picks the ball up deep in his own half, before taking on anyone who fancies an attempt to take the ball off of him. He has Dean Saunders to his right-hand side but, as he gets closer to the goal, Atkinson notices Wimbledon’s goalkeeper also seems keen to take the ball.

Creeping forward, Atkinson catches him out with a deft chip. The celebrations that followed were just as iconic, with an unnamed man providing an umbrella for the goalscorer as his teammates embrace him.
