Throwback: Erik Lamela’s Rabona

This week’s throwback is a look at Erik Lamela’s rabona goal in 2014.

It was a Thursday night Europa League game at Spurs’ now-former stadium, White Hart Lane. Playing against the Greek side Asteras Tripolis, on paper it was a pretty ordinary game.

However, it is remembered for an extraordinary goal, as Erik Lamela scored an audacious effort. Lamela’s rabona was from 20 yards out, as he perfectly executed a skill we’re used to seeing for passes at a push. In the same game, a young Harry Kane also scored a hat-trick and ended up in goal, following an injury to the Tottenham ‘keeper.

Still a fairly new addition to the set-up at Tottenham Hotspurs back then, Lamela actually made his 200th appearance for the club this week.

On the scoresheet again, Erik Lamela has quietly gone about his business and become a very popular player with the club. However, there was nothing quiet about this goal that was replayed around the world over and over again after having hit the back of the net.
