Diego Maradona was given a hero’s welcome when he took his side Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata to Newell’s Old Boys, a club who played a key role in the legend’s career.
Given gifts before the match, one of which was a throne to watch the match from, Maradona watched on as his side recorded an unlikely away victory. Troubled by the prospect of relegation, Gimnasia were big underdogs against the Argentine giants that are Newell’s Old Boys.

But it was one of their own old boys who took the spoils, as the visitors, led by their iconic manager, won 4-0. Maradona played for Old Boys in the 90s, winding down his incredible career with the club. As such, he is heralded as a legend there and Diego joined in chants with Old Boys prior to even arriving at the stadium.
