Youri Regeer: Keeping It Real, On and Off the Pitch

Youri Regeer embodies the Dutch sense of calm: grounded, direct, and driven by clear values. Recently back in Amsterdam with Ajax, the 21-year-old midfielder is quietly carving out his place — without bravado, but with a strong sense of who he is and where he wants to go.

Mindset: Learning from the Best

For Regeer, mindset is everything. He looks up to Cristiano Ronaldo, whose discipline and longevity inspire him every day. “To still play at the top level at forty says it all,” Regeer says. Between matches every three or four days, Youri treats his body like a car that needs quality fuel — food, hydration, sleep. He learned that it takes more than just training to stay in a good shape. It’s recovery, ice baths, time with family. “You need things outside football to stay grounded,” he says.

Dealing with Pressure and Setbacks

While he hasn’t had many injuries, a recent setback tested his mental strength. “When I got injured after returning to Ajax, it really hit me. But you flip the switch — you have to.” He talks openly with coaches, teammates, and family. Respect and honesty are his pillars: “Treat others how you want to be treated.”

Versatility as a Strength

Ajax brought Regeer back because of his ability to cover multiple positions — something he once struggled with. Now he sees it as an advantage: “There’s a clear plan now. I know what’s expected and where I play.” He credits the club’s professional spirit for helping him stay sharp as Ajax aims for trophies.

Future Goals and Giving Back

As a mainstay with Jong Oranje, Regeer thrives on pushing his team forward. “We stayed unbeaten — huge credit to the staff and players.” He’s not fazed by online chatter either: “People always have opinions. It’s about what you do on the pitch.”

Looking ahead, he dreams of a league title with Ajax and a call-up to the senior national team. Off the pitch, coaching could be part of his future — he already helps his dad train an amateur team. “Maybe there’s a coach in me,” Youri Regeer says with a smile.
