Yan Diomande Went From High School Football to Madrid in 17 Months
Football has produced plenty of overnight success stories. The rise of Yan Diomande feels even faster. Less than two years ago, the Ivorian winger was playing high school football in the United States while developing at DME Academy in Florida. Now, after a whirlwind rise through Spain, Germany and the international stage, he is on the verge of becoming a Real Madrid player. One of football’s newest stars has barely had time to catch his breath.
From Florida to Spain
Born in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, Diomande moved to the United States at a young age, where he continued his football development with DME Academy in Daytona Beach, Florida.
While many of Europe’s biggest talents were already part of elite academies, Diomande’s path looked very different. He played high school football, represented DME Academy and even featured for affiliate side Frenzi before attracting interest from European clubs.
That opportunity arrived in January 2025, when CD Leganés brought him to Spain.
Six Months Changed Everything
Diomande’s stay at Leganés was remarkably short.
After beginning with the club’s reserve side, he quickly earned a promotion to the first team and made his La Liga debut in March 2025. Just weeks later, he scored his first professional goals and established himself as one of the league’s most exciting young attackers.
His performances convinced RB Leipzig to activate his release clause that summer, giving the teenager his first move to one of Europe’s top leagues.
The Shirt Swap
Some professional debuts are remembered for a goal. Diomande’s is remembered for what happened afterwards.
His first La Liga appearance came away at the Santiago Bernabéu against Real Madrid. Standing on the opposite side was Kylian Mbappé, one of the players he had grown up watching.
After the final whistle, the teenager asked Mbappé for his shirt.
It was a simple moment that showed just how quickly football can change. At the time, Yan Diomande was an 18-year-old making his first appearance at the highest level. Now, only a little over a year later, the two are expected to share the same dressing room.
A Breakthrough Season
Leipzig proved to be the perfect next step. The Bundesliga gave Diomande a bigger stage, and he looked immediately at home. In his first season in Germany, the Ivorian winger scored 13 goals and registered ten assists, establishing himself as one of the league’s most exciting young attackers. His fearless dribbling, direct running and composure in front of goal quickly attracted attention from Europe’s biggest clubs.
His rise did not stop there. Still only 19, Diomande earned his first call-up for Ivory Coast and made his FIFA World Cup debut in the United States, Mexico and Canada. A player who had been competing in American high school football less than two years earlier was now performing on the biggest stage in the sport.
It was only a matter of time before another move followed.
The Next Chapter
Real Madrid looks increasingly likely to be Diomande’s next destination, but the move is not official yet.
Negotiations with RB Leipzig have continued while Diomande has returned to his current club. After initially missing part of Leipzig’s preparations through illness, the 19-year-old travelled to the club’s training camp in Austria and has now returned to training. At the same time, talks with Real Madrid remain ongoing.
The biggest sticking point has been the price. Leipzig have been reluctant sellers throughout the summer and had previously made it clear that they were under no pressure to let one of their biggest young talents leave. Earlier reporting put their valuation at around €130 million, while Madrid had already seen lower offers rejected.
The latest reports suggest the two clubs are now much closer. Some major outlets have even reported an agreement in the region of €125 million plus add-ons, potentially taking the transfer to around €135–140 million. However, until Leipzig or Real Madrid formally announce the transfer, Diomande remains a Leipzig player.
For now, that final step still has to happen. But whether it comes this summer or later, Diomande’s journey from high school football in Florida to becoming the subject of a nine-figure battle involving Real Madrid has already unfolded at a pace that almost defies belief.
