Why Did Ronald de Boer Invest in the Amigos App?
When footballers hang up their boots, many head toward coaching or punditry. Ronald de Boer chose something different: investing in a movement that helps people scroll less and live more.

Meet Amigos
The former Dutch international has joined forces with fellow legends like Marco van Basten and Frank Rijkaard as an investor and ambassador for Amigos, a real-life social app that encourages users to break routines, meet people offline, and rediscover the joy of shared activity. For Ronald, the choice wasn’t just about business — it was personal.
“In many ways, Amigos reminds me of what football gave me growing up,” Ronald says. “Being outside, being active, connecting with others — it gave structure, joy, and purpose. I believe everyone deserves to feel that.”
The app’s mission — helping people live richer lives by stepping outside of passive scrolling habits — resonates deeply with Ronald. “It’s a message that’s really needed today. So many young people are glued to screens. With Amigos, they can start doing things again — not just watching others do them.”
From Social Media to Social Movement
Launched just three years ago, Amigos has grown to over a million users across seven countries. Unlike traditional social platforms, the app emphasises simplicity and spontaneity. Users can join nearby activities — from padel matches to group walks — without the pressure of perfect profiles or curated content.
Founder Johanan explains: “We wanted to design something that didn’t trap people in their phones but helped them transition into real-life experiences. It’s not about competing. It’s about moving, connecting, and living.”
This vision appealed to Ronald — not just as a former athlete, but also as a father of four, and as someone who’s passionate about mental and physical wellbeing. “When I see how isolated some people have become, especially younger generations, it makes me want to act. Amigos offers a way back to real connection. You don’t need a team or a club, just the app and an open mindset.”
The Future of Athlete Investments
Ronald’s move into tech is part of a broader shift among former players. As more athletes explore life after football, they’re turning to startups that align with their values.
“We’ve seen footballers become brand ambassadors and open restaurants. But now there’s also a wave of smart, impact-driven investments — and that excites me,” Ronald shares. “It’s not about visibility, but value. Amigos creates real, measurable value in people’s lives.”
So what’s next?
Ronald hints at more projects to come. “If something mixes sports, tech, and a social mission — I’m listening. I want to help build things that matter.”
In an age of hyperconnection and digital overload, Ronald de Boer’s message is refreshingly clear: “We need to move. We need to meet. And we need to live — not just scroll.”
With Amigos, he’s not just backing an app. He’s investing in a better way of life.
The match between (former) football players and Amigos seems to be a successful one. That’s why Amigos is open to welcoming more football players on board. Feel free to reach out to the founder about this: johanan@amigossocial.com.
