Troy Parrott Interview: The Power of Confidence and Expression

Life in the Netherlands has given Troy Parrott a sense of peace he had not felt before. He plays with freedom, moves with purpose and feels understood in his daily life. Troy Parrott is nominated for this year’s Life After Football Fashion Player Awards, and in our interview he reflects on mental clarity, personal style and the pride he carries for where he comes from.

A Sense of Home

The Netherlands has become a place where Parrott feels himself, both on and off the pitch. “I think it is great here. From the moment I arrived, I felt I could be myself,” he says. “In some countries people judge quicker about what you wear or say, but here you are encouraged to express yourself. That has given me a lot. On the pitch I can play freely, and off the pitch I can show my style.” With supportive staff at AZ and across the Eredivisie, he has grown in confidence as both a player and a person.

When pressure arrives, he keeps perspective. “I try not to put pressure on myself. People often ask how many goals I will score, but I do not focus on that. When it goes well, I enjoy it. When it is tough, I keep going. The world does not stop after one bad game. And the people who love me will keep loving me no matter what.”

Style as Expression

Troy Parrott’s influence in style goes further than the outfits he wears. He is also an ambassador for Montirex, a clothing brand that is hugely popular in Dublin. “In Dublin, where I come from, the brand is big. Kids wear it, adults wear it. It felt familiar, and their values match what is important to me,” he says.

His own style reflects that same balance. “Simple. But sometimes I like something that goes outside the lines.” Fashion gives him a way to express himself without speaking, a quiet confidence that fits his personality. Accessories play a key role too. “They are very important. With accessories you can show who you are without needing a loud outfit.”

And for Parrott, the link between fashion and football is clear. “There is definitely a link. It is about expression and confidence. If you dare to wear what you like, it gives you confidence. You take that onto the pitch. Your personality shows in your clothes, but also in your game.”

Irish Roots

Everything comes back to where he is from. His family keeps him grounded. “My mother, my girlfriend, my brothers and sisters. They know me best. They know when things go well and when I need to switch. Their input keeps me focused.”

Troy’s journey began long far from professional football. Before football took over, he also played Gaelic football and boxed. “I gained a lot. Those sports thought me not to be afraid of physical contact, and that helps in football.”

Growing up, he looked to Ronaldinho for inspiration. “I do not play like him at all (laughs), but what he could do with a ball was unbelievable. That stays inspiring.”

Representing Ireland remains one of the deepest honours in his life. “It means a lot. The stadium where we play is ten minutes from where I grew up. When I was a kid I watched games there, and now I walk onto the pitch myself. That feeling is hard to explain. I am grateful every time.”
