The Netherlands’ Fiercest Football Rivalries
The Netherlands may be small in size, but its football culture runs deep. Rivalries here are shaped by history, identity and the differences between cities that see the game in their own way. In Dutch football, some matches go far beyond the pitch, carrying pride, tension and decades of meaning. Here are the three fiercest rivalries of the Eredivisie.

De Klassieker: Feyenoord Rotterdam vs. Ajax Amsterdam
The biggest rivalry in Dutch football is Ajax vs. Feyenoord, known as De Klassieker. It is a clash between Amsterdam and Rotterdam, two cities that could not be more different. Ajax represents creativity, flair and international success, while Feyenoord stands for hard work, loyalty and a strong working-class identity. When they meet, it is not just a football match, but a cultural collision between two ways of thinking.
The rivalry dates back more than a century, with the first meeting in 1919 already surrounded by controversy. Over time, it grew into the defining fixture of Dutch football, often deciding titles and shaping entire seasons. The atmosphere is intense, and away fans are often restricted because of the deep-rooted tensions between the two sides. Every goal, every tackle, every result carries weight far beyond the league table. What makes De Klassieker unique is how personal it feels. Players understand immediately what it means, while fans live for these matches all year. It is about pride, identity and history, where winning means everything and losing is remembered for years.
One of the most famous clashes came in 1983, when Ajax defeated Feyenoord 8–2 in Amsterdam, a result that remains one of the most extreme in the rivalry. Decades later, Feyenoord responded with their own historic statement, beating Ajax 6–0 in 2024, the biggest defeat in Ajax’s Eredivisie history. These results show how quickly dominance can shift in a rivalry where nothing is ever guaranteed.

De Topper: PSV Eindhoven vs. Ajax Amsterdam
While De Klassieker is built on identity, Ajax vs PSV, known as De Topper, is built on competition. These are the two most dominant clubs in modern Dutch football, and their meetings often decide who becomes champion. Amsterdam’s tradition and academy-driven philosophy meets Eindhoven’s efficiency and structure, creating a rivalry based on performance rather than geography.
PSV, historically linked to the Philips company, represents organisation and consistency, while Ajax is known for its attacking football and world-famous youth system. This contrast creates a different kind of tension: less emotional on the surface, but just as intense when it comes to results. Titles, trophies and European ambitions are often on the line when these two face each other. Over the years, De Topper has become the most decisive fixture in the Eredivisie.
A historic moment came in 1964, when Ajax dominated PSV with a 5–0 victory, a result still referenced today as one of the most one-sided clashes between the two. Ajax repeated that dominance in the 1998 KNVB Cup final, again winning 5–0, turning a title match into a statement performance. These games underline how De Topper can swing from tight battles to complete control in a single night.
Feyenoord Rotterdam vs. PSV Eindhoven
The rivalry between PSV and Feyenoord is different again. It is less about national identity and more about competition for position just behind or alongside Ajax. Eindhoven and Rotterdam represent different parts of the Netherlands, with PSV’s structured, almost industrial identity facing Feyenoord’s raw, emotional support base.
Matches between these two clubs are often unpredictable. Both sides have periods of dominance, and when they meet, the balance can shift quickly. The atmosphere is intense in both the Philips Stadion and De Kuip, where fans expect not just victory, but a statement. For both clubs, this fixture is about proving they belong at the very top of Dutch football. What makes this rivalry stand out is its volatility. Unlike the other two, it does not always follow a clear hierarchy.
In 2010, PSV delivered one of the most shocking results in Dutch football history, beating Feyenoord 10–0, the heaviest defeat the Rotterdam club has ever suffered. Less than a year later, Feyenoord responded by winning 3–1 in Eindhoven, showing how quickly momentum can shift in this rivalry.
