The Football Gal: Stories Stitched Into Shirts
“Football shirts are more than just clothing. They carry identity, memory, and belonging,” says Diana Al Shammari. Known as The Football Gal, she transforms jerseys into canvases of culture and self-expression, each stitch weaving emotion into fabric.

From Chaos to Creation
Diana’s journey begins far from football’s glamour. Growing up in Iraq during the early 2000s, her childhood was marked by unrest and uncertainty. “Chaos and instability were constant in my youth: the sound of bombings, sirens, the feeling of never being safe,” she recalls.
Football, at that time, was out of reach. Playing outside was impossible, and her connection to the game existed only through fleeting glimpses. When her family fled Iraq, first to Egypt and later to the United States, football slowly became a constant source of comfort. Watching matches or slipping into her brother’s shirts allowed her to feel part of a world that once seemed distant.
“Football was my only constant joy. It gave me a way to feel connected to the world outside the chaos,” she explains. Those early experiences shaped the foundation of her artistic vision: to create pieces that carry identity, comfort, and belonging.
As a result, in 2017, she launched The Football Gal, a project that reimagines the shirt as more than just sportswear, but as a canvas where memory and culture intertwine.
Cultures Woven Together
For Diana, each shirt tells a personal story. Her multicultural upbringing, shaped by being Arab, refugee, immigrant and Londoner, is stitched into every design.
“I always felt divided between cultures and identities,” she says. “Football shirts gave meaning to that.” By embroidering flowers tied to regions, or motifs inspired by cultural heritage, she transforms collective symbols into intimate reflections of self.
Her signature lies in florals, which she sees as both delicate and powerful. “Flowers are soft and fragile, and that contrasts beautifully with football. That balance between strength and softness makes my style recognizable.” The contrast is deliberate. At the same time, within the rigid, structured world of sport, Diana’s embroidery adds a layer of individuality and expression. Each stitch is a reminder that within shared traditions, every fan and every player has a unique story to tell.
Designs That Tell a Story
Diana approaches each project with research and intention. She studies the shirt’s history, its region, and its cultural symbols before sketching possible designs.
“I begin with research. I look into the flora of a country, its colors and traditions, then build moodboards and sketches. But I also leave space for intuition. Sometimes the design changes halfway if it does not feel right.”

This method has shaped her collaborations with brands like Puma, where she reimagined Italy’s Renaissance-inspired kit, and personal commissions for high-profile clients. What’s more, one of her most meaningful collaborations was with Barcelona defender Jules Koundé, who wanted a shirt that reflected both his French roots and his Spanish life.
“Jules has a real sense of style and meaning. We added a white lily for France, a red carnation for Spain, and filled the rest with wildflowers. His motto ‘be you, do you’ was embroidered on the back. It came from our conversations, and that made the piece so personal.”
Fashion Meets Football
Diana’s designs have found an audience far beyond the terraces. Musician Joe Jonas has worn her shirts on stage, and her work has been shared widely across fashion and football culture alike.
“When someone chooses to perform in your creation, it means the work reflects who they are. That is a huge honor.”
Her art proves that football shirts can be more than uniforms. They can become symbols of identity, creativity, and memory. Meanwhile, withThe Football Gal, Diana Al Shammari shows that football and fashion are not separate worlds, but perfect partners in storytelling.
