Shayne Pattynama: Embracing Change and Growth
From loss to leadership, from personal reflection to national pride — Shayne Pattynama is a footballer whose journey runs deeper than the pitch. In this second part of our conversation, he opens up about faith, family, and what it means to grow through change.

Finding Purpose Through Faith
As Shayne’s career advanced, so did his inner life — a shift that began when he started reconnecting with his faith.
“Recently, I’ve been reconnecting with my faith. My father was religious, and he always let us explore our beliefs freely. Lately, I’ve found peace and clarity in it. It helps me reflect on myself, and grow as an athlete and as a man.”
Faith has become a guiding force, helping him navigate the highs and lows of football and life. Shayne now regularly joins weekly calls with close friends, grounding conversations in spirituality and self-reflection.
“It’s powerful. It’s not about preaching — it’s about growing together.”
Honoring His Father’s Legacy
A turning point in Shayne’s life was the passing of his father — an experience that changed how he views everything.
It made me realize that nothing is promised. Life can change in an instant. One day, everything feels perfect, and the next, someone is gone.
That loss taught him resilience and perspective — a reminder that even in grief, the world keeps moving. “Football, goals — everything continues, even when life feels unfair. You have to keep going.”
His father remains present in Shayne’s daily life. “Every day. I talk about him all the time. Mina never met him, but she knows so much about him because I always share stories. Before every game, I talk to him, kiss my tattoo dedicated to him, and remind myself that he’s watching over me.”
Representing More Than Himself
Wearing the Indonesian national team jersey carries special meaning for Shayne Pattynama — not just as a professional milestone, but as a personal tribute.
“Playing against Argentina, the world champion, in front of 80,000 fans — that was the best moment of my career. I wasn’t even thinking about whether I played well. Just being there was surreal. It was extra special because my father was born in Indonesia. I felt like I was playing for him, too.”
The emotion of the national anthem during the Asian Cup remains unforgettable.
“I arrived late due to personal reasons, so I was in the stands during the anthem. Seeing the players, staff, fans — everyone crying with pride — that moment showed me how much football means to Indonesia.”
With the arrival of Patrick Kluivert as head coach, Shayne feels a renewed sense of purpose and ambition in the national team. “His presence alone is a game-changer. For me especially, it’s surreal — I played my first game for Indonesia only two and a half years ago, and now the dream of the World Cup feels more real than ever.”
People used to call Indonesia a ‘sleeping giant,’ but we’re not sleeping anymore — we’re rising.
Staying Grounded
Through the pressure and expectation, Mina continues to be Shayne’s anchor.
“She’s been everything. Whether it’s a tough game or personal struggles, she grounds me and reminds me to focus on what I can control. She’s flown out just to be there when I was struggling. Without her, I wouldn’t have grown as much — as a footballer and as a person.”
Words That Matter
When asked what inspires him most, Shayne Pattynama mentions a book: The Purpose Driven Life. He reads it daily — using its small reflections to stay focused and grateful. One quote in particular has shaped his mindset:
If you doubt yourself, you’re also doubting God.
“It reminds me that my talent was given to me for a reason. If you receive a gift, why would you question whether you deserve it? Everyone doubts themselves — even the most confident people. But faith teaches you that your ability isn’t random. You’re here for a purpose.”
Shayne hopes his story can inspire young players — especially those who feel uncertain or unseen.
“Self-doubt will always creep in. But if you truly believe in yourself and put in the work, you can achieve anything. It’s all about the mindset. If you want something bad enough, you’ll find a way.”
Closing the Chapter — and Opening a New One
Shayne Pattynama’s story is still unfolding. But one thing is clear: he is more than a footballer. He is a leader, a believer, and a reminder that real strength lies in vulnerability, reflection, and the willingness to grow.
