Ruben Kluivert: ”When you look good, you feel good.”
After a successful season, Ruben Kluivert is ready for the next step in his career. The talented defender has caught the attention of several clubs, including RC Lens and Olympique Lyonnais. But here at Life After Football, we’d never miss the chance to talk about more than just football. So we sat down with the son of Patrick and brother of Justin to talk about style, confidence, no go’s, and fashion essentials.

How would you describe your style?
Ruben Kluivert: “Classy, but definitely comfortable too. Those two words describe my style best.”
Do you have a favorite clothing item?
“I don’t really have one specific favorite, but I do like wearing polos. I’m not tied to a certain brand. If I like the look of it, that’s enough – even if it’s just a simple black or white polo.”
Are there any brands or shops you lean toward?
“I shop a lot at 1 Amsterdam. It’s a great store in the capital with a wide variety of brands and styles. Most of the clothes I buy come from there. They know exactly what fits my vibe.”
Which teammate do you think has great style?
“That has to be Quinten Timber. He played at the same club and has a really good sense of style – very similar to mine. Whatever he wears, it just always works for him.”
There have been many stylish players through the years, but he’s just different.
Do you have a fashion role model?
“Karim Benzema, without a doubt. His outfits are incredibly well put together – the way he combines colors, the way his looks always have a clean, recognizable identity. I really admire that. There have been many stylish players through the years, but Benzema still stands out for me. He’s just different.”
What do you look for when buying clothes?
“Comfort comes first. I don’t like tight clothing – It need to be able to move freely. I won’t wear anything too flashy, but I’m also not afraid to try something new.”
What’s a fashion no-go for you?
“Louboutin sneakers. Don’t get me wrong – they make beautiful boots, dress shoes, loafers, all that. But those sneakers with the spikes and wild decorations? Not for me. Plus, they’re crazy expensive. If you want a good sneaker, go with a proper sneaker brand.”
What was your first expensive fashion buy?
“A pair of shoes I really wanted. I saved up for a long time and finally bought them. It was the first piece I ever bought with my own money – and I wore them to death, haha.”

What accessories do you consider essential?
“A couple of good bags – two or three I rotate between – and a solid watch. A watch completes a dressed-up outfit. I love brands like Rolex and Patek Philippe.”
When I put on my match kit and step on the field, I feel ready.
Do clothes affect your mindset or confidence?
“Definitely. When you look good, you feel good. It’s the same in football. When I put on my match kit and step on the field, I feel ready. It’s partly psychological, but it works.”
Tracksuit or suit?
“That’s a tough one. I wear tracksuits and sportswear most of the time, and I love how comfortable they are. But wearing a good suit on special occasions is something I enjoy too. The fact that you don’t wear it every day makes it feel extra special.”
