Robin van Persie: From Player to Head Coach
Robin van Persie’s journey in football has come full circle. Once Feyenoord’s star player, he is now stepping into the role of head coach, bringing his deep understanding of the game to the sidelines. Three years ago, we spoke to Robin van Persie about his ambitions and his early experiences in coaching. Now, as he takes on one of the biggest challenges of his career, it’s the perfect time to revisit that conversation and see how his vision has evolved.
Robin van Persie has always been known for his vision on the pitch, but now he’s bringing that same sharpness to the dugout. As Feyenoord’s new head coach, his transition from football legend to manager is one of careful preparation, dedication, and an eagerness to grow. Three years ago, when we sat down with him, his ambitions were already shifting. He spoke openly about his passion for coaching, his love for the game, and the challenges of moving from player to mentor. Even then, his commitment was clear.
The Road to Coaching
At the time of our interview, Van Persie had just completed his UEFA A coaching diploma, which allowed him to coach at the youth and under-21 levels. However, he had his sights set on something bigger.
“If it were up to me, I would enroll in the final course for the UEFA Pro License, which qualifies you to be the head coach of a professional first team,” he said back then. Now, he has done exactly that—taking charge of Feyenoord’s first team, a testament to his determination and willingness to learn.
Unlike some former players who rely on their name and experience alone, Van Persie knew that being a great footballer doesn’t automatically make you a great coach. He emphasized the importance of learning every aspect of the profession, from tactical planning and player development to handling media and managing relationships with club staff.
“Before I train with the group at Feyenoord in the morning, I meet with the performance department, the medical staff, focus on the team we’re playing on Saturday, prepare training sessions, and so on. You’re spending hours on everything every day if you want to do it right. And I do,” he explained.
A New Perspective on Football
While Van Persie’s playing career was filled with iconic moments, coaching has given him a fresh perspective on the sport. He no longer looks too far ahead into the future. Instead, his greatest joy comes from watching his family grow and finding fulfilment in everyday experiences.
“I’ve already achieved my greatest ambitions, and most of my dreams have come true, especially thanks to my children,” he told us. He says he feels immense happiness watching his children pursue their dreams: his daughter Dina is a fan of horseback riding and his son Shaqueel follows in his footballing footsteps.
Robin has approached coaching with the same mindset as he did his playing career—commitment to continuous learning. Even though he’s spent years competing at the highest level, he recognizes that coaching is a completely different challenge—one that requires patience, adaptability, and a deep understanding of how to inspire the next generation.
What’s Next for Van Persie?
Now, with the Feyenoord first team under his leadership, Van Persie has the chance to shape the club’s future. His attention to detail, tactical intelligence, and commitment to player development will be put to the test. But if his coaching philosophy is anything like his playing style—creative, precise, and always evolving—Feyenoord is in very good hands.
For Van Persie, this is just the beginning. And as he steps into this new chapter, we’ll be watching closely to see how his passion for the game translates into success on the sidelines.
