Ricky van Wolfswinkel: ”That kit really stands out, and it was during one of the best times of my career.”

In the summer of 2021, Ricky van Wolfswinkel returned to Dutch football with a suitcase full of experience. Now, the seasoned striker has extended his contract and is heading into his fifth season with FC Twente. Football isn’t Ricky van Wolfswinkel’s only passion. Two years ago, he was nominated for the Life After Football Fashion Player Award, where we spoke with him about style, kits, and the best-dressed teammate.

Ricky van Wolfswinkel
How would you describe your personal style?

Ricky van Wolfswinkel: ”I’d say my style is pretty basic, clean, and simple. I enjoy mixing things up, but I always keep it low-key. Think trousers with an oversized T-shirt and sneakers. Super comfortable, and that’s all I need. I do enjoy dressing up for events, though. If I’m heading to a restaurant, I’ll make sure I look sharp. But if it’s a night out at a club, I’ll go for something more sporty and relaxed.”

You’ve played in several countries. What fashion differences stood out to you?

”There are definitely big differences. Every country has its own vibe, and you see that reflected on the streets. I remember grabbing a drink in Switzerland once. We were a bit overdressed for the place. You could literally walk in there wearing hiking boots, no problem. Those are the little cultural moments you don’t forget. I love that each country brings something unique. You can even see it walking through Amsterdam. The diversity in styles is amazing.”

Which country had the best-dressed people?

”That’s a tough one, but I’d have to go with Spain. Their style lines up most with my own — very relaxed and not too matchy-matchy. People there really enjoy life, and you can see that in the way they dress. It’s effortless but stylish.”

Which (former) teammate had the best fashion sense?

”Definitely good old Michel Vorm. That guy was always immaculately dressed. We played together at FC Utrecht and still keep in touch. His look leaned a bit more toward casual chic, but he always nailed it. You could tell he put thought into every detail, from head to toe, even his hairstyle. It was all dialed in.”

”I’ve seen my fair share of questionable outfits over the years.”

And who could use some style advice?

”Oh, I’ve seen my fair share of questionable outfits over the years. But to be fair, everyone should wear what makes them feel good. Some guys would walk into the locker room, and I’d seriously wonder if they got dressed in the dark — especially during my time abroad. But hey, who am I to judge? Everyone has their own thing going on, and I don’t claim to have the perfect style either.”

What’s one fashion item from 10 years ago you wouldn’t wear today?

”Alexander McQueens, big no from me. I never really wore them, but I did buy a pair. Huge waste of money. Still regret it. I even tried giving them away once, and the person didn’t want them. That says it all. Haha.”

At which club did you have the best team outfit, and why?

”I’d say Basel. That was the first time we actually switched things up from the standard suit. We got trousers with a polo and sweater instead of the usual blazer and tie. It felt fresh. Luckily, more clubs are catching on now. At Twente, we’re also moving away from the outdated pointy shoes and stiff ties.”

What’s the coolest football shirt you’ve ever worn?

”Sporting CP, hands down. The green and white stripes just scream football to me. That kit really stands out, and it was during one of the best times of my career. I felt great in it. Wearing a kit that gives you confidence? That’s like starting the match 1-0 up. You’ve got to perform in it, but feeling good in your gear definitely gives you a little edge.”
