There was a beautiful story in La Liga this weekend, as Real Betis’ legendary winger, Joaquin became the oldest player to score a hat-trick in the Spanish top-flight.
At 38 years and 140 days young, Joaquin, a former Spain international and a veteran of 533 La Liga games, netted three against Athletic Bilbao in the opening 20 minutes. The 18-minute hat-trick helped Real Betis to a vital 3-2 win in what felt like a iconic day for their famous captain.
The happy couple
The previous record was held by the legendary Alfredo di Stefano, who had been the oldest player to score a La Liga hat-trick for the previous 55 years. An amazing achievement by a player who made his debut in the year 2000. As he leads Real Betis into 2020, he will mark two decades at the top of Spanish football.
