Chris Smalling might seem like something of a rogue choice for our Player of the Weekend this time, but ‘Smaldini’s’ fine form has earnt him the title.
On loan at the Serie A, it seemed that the experienced English defender is appreciating the change of scenery in the Italian capital. Chris Smalling was far from the most acclaimed defender when he left Manchester United in the summer, following mixed form for the Premier League side.
As such, his loan move to AS Roma raised a few eyebrows. His return to form though has won over several Roma fans quickly, while social media savvy football fans on have dubbed him ‘Smaldini.’ While he might not be as glamorous as Paolo Maldini, the AC Milan, Serie A and Italy legend, he’s certainly in a rich vein of form.
A second goal of the season and two assists against Brescia helped Roma to a 3-0 win this weekend, while that clean sheet was one of four shut outs for Smalling’s temporary club this weekend. Call him Chris Smalling or call him Smaldini, but whatever you call him, the on-loan defender is our Player of the Weekend. Bellissimo.
