Nathan Tjoe-A-On Interview: Embracing Culture and Community
Growing up in Rotterdam taught Nathan Tjoe-A-On that style can speak just as loudly as words. Cultures mixed, people dressed with intention and individuality was part of daily life. Nathan Tjoe-A-On is nominated for the Life After Football Fashion Player Awards, and in our exclusive interview he reflects on style, creativity and the community he is building through his own brand.

Style with Purpose
Tjoe-A-On may come across calm outside the pitch, yet he plays with high intensity. He sees that duality in his outfits as well. “I used to wear clothing with big logos. Now I prefer quiet colours and clean items, but I combine them in a way that feels like me,” he says. His sense of style took shape in Rotterdam. “There are so many cultures. You start looking around and wonder what you think looks good. My parents liked clothing, so I picked up fashion early.”
That grew into something bigger the moment he returned to Indonesia. “People recognised me because of what I wore. My outfits showed up on Instagram pages and fans asked where I bought things. Some even started wearing the same pieces. Then I realised people were taking in my style.”
He stays aware of that reach without changing who he is. “I want to show positive things. Not just posting anything, but making sure it fits who I am.” What defines him most is simplicity with detail. “If one item had to represent me, I would say an accessory. I dress quietly, but a necklace or bracelet can make it personal.”
Building a Brand and a Community
Tjoe-A-On’s rise on social media pushed him to create more than he wore. “When your platform grows, you want to do something that fits you. Clothing made sense,” he says. His own brand n8n collective blends Indonesian influences with European minimalism. “In Indonesia people use more colour and prints. In the Netherlands we are more minimalist. With my brand I try to bring those worlds together. A calm front with a graphic on the back that refers to Indonesia.”
His designs carry meaning. “We have a shirt with an angel from an old Indonesian book. We mixed that form with football elements and added coordinates. It seems simple, but it has a real story.”

Still, he wants his pieces to feel accessible. “I want people to express themselves. It has to be comfortable and something they are proud to wear. One item can already make a full outfit.”
Community is his priority. “We organise things so people feel part of the brand. When your fanbase is partly in another country, you need to make more effort to stay close. So we listen to what people like.”
And he keeps his creative vision grounded. “I try not to dress in one brand from top to bottom. Combining things makes it personal. That is what I want with my own brand too.”
A Shared Vision
His girlfriend plays a big part in his creative world. “She studied at Fashion University in London. She showed me that you are free to wear what you want. And she reminds me not to think smaller just because you get older,” he says.
The couple now works on a new line together. “We are looking at activewear. She trains every day. I play football and padel. We want something you can wear to the gym and still look good if you go somewhere after.”
Being open about their lives is a conscious choice. “We want to show that we are just people who work, plan and chase goals. Not every day is perfect. If you feel good in what you wear, that should be enough. You cannot please everyone.”
Nathan Tjoe-A-On ends our interview mentioning his biggest dream for the brand. It is simple and ambitious at the same time. “A place of our own. We are already looking at options in Jakarta. Not just a store, but a space where people can hang out. Music, drinks, meeting people. A real community spot.”
