He announced it with a photo of a handwritten letter, laying out his decision to retire after a 20-year stint with La Albiceleste, one filled with promise, fear, despair, and ultimately, success.
The Letter He Kept for a Month
Messi revealed in the post he’d actually written the letter back on July 21st, just two days after Argentina’s World Cup final defeat. He held onto it for over a month before finally sharing it with the world.
These words from Messi stood out in the post, really confirming that there are no do-overs this time.
It was a decision that hurt and hurts in the soul but I understand it’s time.
One Last World Cup for the Ages
Messi retires from international football after arguably one of his best individual World Cup campaigns yet. At 39 years old, he silenced the critics who said he was too old to be playing. He led Argentina all the way to the final, where they’d fall 1-0 to Spain in extra time. Along the way, 17-year-old Lamine Yamal announced himself as the sport’s next great star.
Most players Messi’s age have either succumbed to father time or hung up their boots for good. Messi, though, still stood tall among players half his age. With 8 goals and 4 assists, he briefly broke the all-time World Cup goalscoring record. He reached 21, surpassing Germany’s Miroslav Klose. Kylian Mbappé then overtook him, finishing the tournament with 22. Messi did walk away with one record intact, though: 12 career World Cup assists, overtaking Brazil’s Pelé for the most ever.
Ever since his triumph at the 2022 World Cup, people assumed it was only a matter of time before he stepped away from Argentina. After all, that tournament marked the summit of his international career. Instead, he kept going. His performance at this year’s tournament reminded the world why he’s arguably the greatest player of all time. It really does feel like only Messi ever truly knew his own limits.
However, it was the passing of his father, Jorge Messi, to whom he also left a heartfelt tribute, that became the ultimate catalyst. It helped Messi finally make up his mind. It was time to hang up his boots and let Argentina enter a new era without him at the centre. The end of his retirement post echoed that same thought.

He would ultimately change his mind, rejoining the national team and dragging Argentina to the 2018 World Cup, a tournament they likely wouldn’t have reached without him. It was a disappointing campaign, but from there, things could only go up. It’s a far cry from where things stand now. Messi retires from international football as a champion, not a scapegoat.
The Scaloni Turnaround
The turning point came with a major reshuffle within the Argentina Football Association. Most importantly, this included the appointment of coach Lionel Scaloni. Under him, Argentina slowly became a force to be reckoned with. What made this era of the squad (2021–2025) so infectious was simple: every player was willing to sacrifice themselves just to see Messi succeed.
Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez put it simply: “We are all lions who fight for him!” Midfielder Rodrigo De Paul echoed the sentiment: “When he becomes your captain, you’d go to war for him if he asked you to.”
It’s no surprise this sense of collectiveness turned his international fortunes around. A World Cup, a Finalissima, and two consecutive Copa América trophies later joined his trophy cabinet. On top of that, what sets Messi apart from other footballers is his wealth management. Over the years, he has expanded his portfolio across hospitality, real estate, sport, media, and consumer products. His most notable ventures include MiM Hotels, 525 Rosario, and Play Time Sports-Tech HoldCo, among others.
That same instinct for partnerships shows up in his role as Mastercard’s global ambassador. It’s a role that’s still keeping him busy well beyond the pitch.
As recently as July 2026, right as the World Cup kicked off, Mastercard reached out to Dutch fintech GoDutch. They asked a simple question: would GoDutch want to do something with their ambassador?
GoDutch didn’t know who they meant yet. So they asked.
The answer came back: Lionel Messi.
According to GoDutch founder Thomas Vles, the entire campaign came together in a matter of days, not months. It included card design, landing pages, and billboards across five major Dutch cities, all timed to run alongside the tournament itself. It’s a small example, but a telling one. Even mid-World Cup, Messi’s commercial footprint was active and moving fast.

But if there’s one thing Messi won’t be remembered for, it’s numbers alone. Statistics can only tell half the story. What set him apart just as much was how he carried himself off the pitch.
