Messi Farewell Shirt Celebrates the End of an Argentina Era
Lionel Messi has worn Argentina’s famous sky blue and white through almost every stage of his career. From a teenage debut to World Cup heartbreak, Copa América triumphs and finally lifting the World Cup, the No. 10 shirt became inseparable from his story. Now adidas has created one final version. The Messi farewell shirt will be worn when Argentina face Benin at the Estadio Monumental on 6 October, marking Messi’s final international appearance after more than two decades with the national team. The special-edition jersey sits at the centre of a wider adidas collection created specifically to celebrate his Argentina career.

One Last Argentina Shirt
Messi gave supporters the first look himself. In a video posted to Instagram, he removes Argentina’s regular shirt from a wall before replacing it with the new commemorative design. His message was equally simple: “One last match… A jersey for a lifetime.”
That phrase captures what adidas is trying to achieve with the release. This is not simply another alternative Argentina kit. The shirt has been created for one match and one player, turning Messi’s final appearance into something supporters can immediately associate with a specific design. On 6 October, Argentina will wear it against Benin in Buenos Aires, with Messi set to make his final appearance in the national colours.
Argentina, Reimagined for Messi
The shirt moves away from Argentina’s familiar striped layout. Instead, a predominantly sky-blue base is divided by a broad white section through the centre, while a reinterpretation of the Sun of May stretches across the front and back. The national symbol makes the jersey feel unmistakably Argentine even while the traditional stripes disappear.
Gold runs throughout the design. Argentina’s crest, Messi’s No. 10, his name and other details all receive the metallic treatment, referencing the success that eventually defined the latter years of his international career.
Perhaps the most personal detail sits on the chest. For this shirt, the normal adidas performance logo has been replaced by Messi’s own signature mark, placing the player alongside the Argentina crest on the jersey created for his goodbye.
A Career Told Through A Shirt
It is difficult to separate Messi’s Argentina story from the shirts he wore along the way. For years, they were connected to frustration. Argentina lost the 2014 World Cup final and several Copa América finals, with Messi even briefly announcing his international retirement in 2016.
The story eventually changed completely. Argentina won the Copa América in 2021, the Finalissima in 2022 and, most importantly, the World Cup later that year. Messi would add another Copa América in 2024 before reaching another World Cup final in 2026. He announced his international retirement in August, ending a national-team career that began in 2005.
That history gives the Messi farewell shirt something most commemorative releases cannot manufacture. The nostalgia is already built in.
More Than Just The Jersey
adidas has expanded the idea into a complete Messi x Argentina farewell collection. Alongside the match shirt are pre-match pieces, shorts, socks and lifestyle clothing, with the Argentine flag and Sun of May recurring throughout the range. The collection went on sale from 25 September through adidas and selected retailers.
It is another example of football memorabilia moving beyond the traditional replica shirt. For supporters, the collection represents a chance to own something directly connected to the closing moment of Messi’s international career. For adidas, it also marks one of the final chapters of a relationship between player, brand and national team that has stretched across two decades.
One Shirt For One Final Night
Football rarely gives its biggest players such a clearly defined ending. Messi has already played World Cup finals, lifted major trophies and produced countless moments in Argentina colours. This time there is no tournament still to win and no next international break waiting afterwards.
There is simply one game left. And adidas has made sure that when Messi walks onto the Monumental pitch for the final time, the shirt will look unlike any Argentina jersey he has worn before. The Messi farewell shirt will only be part of his career for one night. That will probably be enough to make it one of the most memorable.
