Two Wrexham footballers feature in new Marvel film Deadpool & Wolverine

When Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney bought the Welsh football club Wrexham AFC in 2020, it changed the trajectory of the football club. Not only did the club gain huge attention from their documentary series Welcome To Wrexham, but it also climbed the ranks of English football. Now another surreal moment has arrived for two of their star players as they both made an appearance in the new blockbuster movie Deadpool & Wolverine.

Deadpool Wrexham AFC Paul Mullin

In the Marvel movie, Reynolds’ character Deadpool and Hugh Jackman’s character Wolverine go head-to-head with an army of alternate Deadpools from across the multiverse. One of those alternate Deadpools is wearing a Welsh flag on his chest and is none other than Wrexham AFC striker Paul Mullin. ‘’You may have noticed one member of the Deadpool Corps was far deadlier than the rest. WELSHPOOL,’’ Reynolds wrote on Instagram.

In 2021, Paul Mullin caught everyone by surprise when he moved from Cambridge United to Wrexham AFC. The Welsh striker was named the EFL League Two Player of the Season and won the League Two Golden Boot as he led Cambridge United to promotion to League One. However, despite being offered a new contract and receiving interest from Championship teams, Mullin chose to play for Wrexham AFC, who at the time were playing in the National League (5th division).

He’s been a big success at Wrexham and has also gained fame off the pitch, which is quite unlikely for a footballer who plays at a lower English level. His popularity has now led him to play Welshpool in Deadpool & Wolverine. So it’s safe to say that Mullin doesn’t regret his transfer to the Welsh side owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. Wrexham AFC has since also updated Mullin’s player profile on their website, which features him wearing the Welshpool suit.

The 29-year-old wasn’t the only footballer from Wrexham AFC to make an appearance in the movie, as their 32-year-old striker Ollie Palmer also had a cameo as a bartender.
