That energy carried into the Life After Football Footvolley Tournament, where Wesley Sneijder, Gregory van der Wiel, Kevin Strootman, Orlando Engelaar, Demy de Zeeuw, Maarten Stekelenburg, Ryan Donk and Jeremain Lens came together for a unique week on the island.

On the court, the relaxed setting quickly gave way to serious competition. Bicycle kicks flew through the air, chest set-ups created difficult angles, one-twos were played through the sand and every rally brought out the old instincts.
Even though the players have retired from professional football, their competitive mindset clearly never disappeared. The documentary captures that balance perfectly. There is laughter, personality and a light-hearted island atmosphere, but once the ball is in play, the focus returns instantly.

Wesley Sneijder looks back on winning the Champions League with Inter Milan in 2010, describing it as a dream come true and one of the defining moments of his life. At the same time, he also reflects on the other side of that same year: reaching the World Cup final with the Netherlands, losing to Spain and finishing second on the biggest stage in football.
Gregory van der Wiel speaks about the importance of staying present and remaining true to yourself, especially in a world where football can make life move incredibly fast. Maarten Stekelenburg revisits the legendary 2010 World Cup quarter final victory over Brazil, including his unforgettable save against Kaká, while also honestly admitting that he still sometimes thinks about Andrés Iniesta’s winning goal in the final against Spain.
Kevin Strootman reflects on how injuries prevented him from fully reaching the level he once imagined for himself, but also how those difficult moments shaped him as a person. Jeremain Lens opens up about the mental challenge of being part of a World Cup squad while knowing playing time would be limited, while Ryan Donk shares an emotional story about experiencing the devastating earthquake in Turkey and helping people survive in the chaos that followed.

Throughout the week, Curaçao Tourist Board introduced the group to the island beyond the court, from local spots and hidden beaches to the culture that makes Curaçao feel so connected to football. One of the most meaningful moments came away from the tournament itself, when Gregory van der Wiel returned to his roots in Sapaté to open a Cruyff Court. After building a career that took him across some of football’s biggest stages, van der Wiel came back to create a place where the next generation can play freely, dream bigger and feel the same love for the game.
The week eventually moved from competition into celebration, with Burbach Roycroft hosting an afterparty at one of their villas. It brought players, partners and guests together in a setting that reflected the feeling of the entire trip: connection.
