Jurriën Timber: ”We share one wardrobe and wear the same pieces”

Jurriën Timber made a high-profile move from Ajax to Arsenal in the summer of 2023, with the North London club investing €40 million in the versatile defender. Timber started strong but suffered a major setback with a serious knee injury. After a season of rehabilitation, he is now fully back and making waves with The Gunners in their pursuit of silverware. His trophy cabinet was already well-stocked from his time at Ajax—both on and off the pitch—having also won the Life After Football Fashion Player Award. In an in-depth interview, he spoke about his clothing style, the sense of fashion in the Ajax dressing room, sharing a wardrobe with his twin brother Quinten Timber, and his absolute fashion no-go’s.

How would you describe your style?

Jurriën Timber: “Simple, but with details. That’s how I’d describe my style. I want to appear effortlessly stylish in a good way and show that I put thought into my outfits. I love working with colors and don’t like flashy branding. My good friend Sebastian Wied Leyton helps me with my outfits and makes sure I look sharp.”

What’s your favorite clothing item?

“I don’t have one specific go-to piece. Every time, I check my wardrobe and decide with my brother Quinten what we’ll wear. As twins, we share one wardrobe and wear the same pieces. When we go out for dinner or a party, we plan our outfits together to maintain our own style. I used to wear a lot of tracksuits, but that phase is over. Now, we even consult each other before buying clothes. If we’re shopping separately, I’ll quickly send Quinten and Sebastian a photo for approval to avoid bad purchases—second opinions are always helpful!”

Do you have favorite brands?

“Very mixed, actually. We often shop at H&M, Weekday, and Zara as a base. But now and then, we get some cool designer pieces. Some brands aren’t available in Amsterdam, so we order them online.

Which teammate do you think is the most fashionable?

“We talk about fashion a lot at Ajax. I spend a lot of time with Ryan Gravenberch, and we discuss style and cool pieces together. I also think Dušan Tadić, Zakaria Labyad, and Sean Klaiber have great fashion sense. Lately, we’ve been talking about wearing stylish outfits without relying on big brands. We all agree that the real flex is looking good and radiating great energy without needing designer labels.”

What’s important to you when buying clothes?

“Quality is key for me. The fit has to be perfect. Last summer, I wore a lot of Uniqlo shirts because they fit my body just right. That’s something I really appreciate. The same goes for pants—they need to fit perfectly. That adds to the quality of your style.”

Do you consider sustainability when buying clothes?

“Yes, I do. I never just throw clothes away—I wear them as long as possible. Plus, Quinten and I share clothes. It doesn’t get much more sustainable than that, right? Haha! As I mentioned, Sebastian helps me with my fashion choices. He actively looks for brands that contribute to a better world. He knows a lot of smaller, cool brands that aren’t mainstream yet.”

What are your absolute fashion no-go’s?

“I don’t like ‘too much.’ No excessive branding. No oversized logos on shirts. Every brand has certain pieces I personally wouldn’t wear, but they also have items I’d definitely rock. It just shouldn’t be ‘too much.’”

What was the first expensive fashion item you bought?

“I think my first big purchase was a pair of shoes… No, actually, it was a jacket! I do spend money on good outerwear. A quality jacket gets a lot of wear, more than most clothing items, so it needs to be nice. Shoes too, of course. People often think ‘outfit’ just means clothes, but shoes and accessories matter just as much. More and more, I see comments on my photos complimenting my sneakers. I love that—it’s something I appreciate!”
