Inter Miami: The Business Move that Defined Beckham’s Legacy
When David Beckham left Real Madrid for LA Galaxy in 2007, the move was widely mocked across the football world. At just 32 years old, Beckham still had the opportunity to extend his contract in Madrid, yet instead of remaining at the highest level of European football, he chose a transfer to the American Major League Soccer.

At the time, MLS was often dismissed as a retirement league, a competition where ageing stars played out the final years of their careers far away from the spotlight of elite football. Many supporters and pundits viewed Beckham’s decision as a commercial move rather than a sporting one. Looking back nearly two decades later, it may have been one of the smartest transfers in football history.
Beckham’s Vision
Beckham’s move to the United States was never just about football. While he would spend several years playing in Los Angeles, the most important part of the deal existed behind the scenes. As part of his contract with LA Galaxy, Beckham received a clause that allowed him to purchase an MLS expansion franchise for 25 million dollars after his playing career. At the time, few people fully understood the significance of that agreement. Today, it forms the foundation of the empire he would eventually build.
That club became Inter Miami CF. Beckham currently owns a 26 percent stake of the organisation, which is now valued at well over one billion dollars. What was once viewed as a risky business gamble has become the defining investment of his post-playing career.
The Birth of Inter Miami
Officially named Club Internacional de Fútbol Miami, the club’s Spanish identity was intentional from the very beginning. The name reflects the strong Latin American and Spanish-speaking culture of both Miami and the wider state of Florida, where football culture has historically been shaped by South American and Caribbean communities.
Inter Miami was officially founded in 2018 and joined MLS in 2020. Before the club could even begin playing, however, Beckham spent years searching for the right location and negotiating stadium plans with local authorities. In 2013, MLS commissioner Don Garber publicly identified Beckham and his business partner Simon Fuller as potential owners of a future Miami franchise.
The project quickly became bigger than football alone. Miami offered something unique: glamour, celebrity culture, Latin influence, nightlife, fashion, and global visibility. In many ways, the club reflected Beckham himself.
Early Struggles
Despite the global attention surrounding the project, success on the pitch did not arrive immediately. Under head coach Phil Neville, Inter Miami struggled to meet expectations despite signing recognised players such as Josef Martínez and DeAndre Yedlin.
On 1 June 2023, Neville was dismissed with the club sitting bottom of the Eastern Conference. At that moment, Inter Miami looked more like an ambitious marketing project than a serious football team. But then everything changed.
Messi Changes Everything
The arrival of Lionel Messi did not just transform Inter Miami on the pitch. It changed the entire perception of the club, the league, and football in the United States itself.
For years, MLS had tried to attract global attention through ageing superstars approaching retirement. But Messi’s move felt different. Despite being in the later stages of his career, he remained one of the best and most influential footballers in the world. Only months earlier, he had captained Argentina national football team to victory at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.That is what made the transfer so significant. Messi did not arrive in America as a forgotten legend. He arrived as the biggest player on the planet.
His decision surprised much of the football world. Many expected him to return to FC Barcelona or accept a record-breaking contract offer from Saudi Arabia. Instead, he chose Miami. The reasons extended far beyond football alone. Miami offered lifestyle, privacy, business opportunities, Latin culture, and familiarity for both Messi and his family. The city’s strong Spanish-speaking identity made the transition feel natural, while partnerships involving Apple and Adidas reportedly gave the deal an additional commercial dimension rarely seen in football transfers.
But perhaps most importantly, Miami offered freedom. After years of relentless pressure at Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Miami presented Messi with something different: the chance to enjoy football again while simultaneously expanding his global influence beyond the sport itself.
His arrival instantly elevated Inter Miami into one of the most talked-about clubs in world football. Ticket prices exploded. Celebrity appearances became normal. Pink Inter Miami shirts appeared everywhere from New York City to Tokyo. MLS Season Pass subscriptions surged, stadiums sold out across the country, and every Inter Miami away game suddenly felt like a big event.
On the pitch, Messi delivered immediately. Goals, assists, and the club’s first trophy arrived almost instantly. Inter Miami lifted the League Cup in 2023, marking the first silverware in club history.

Yet his biggest impact may have happened off the field. Messi gave Inter Miami legitimacy. What once looked like Beckham’s ambitious business experiment suddenly became one of football’s most glamorous projects.
And where Messi goes, others follow. Former Barcelona teammates Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, and later Luis Suárez all joined him in Miami, transforming the club into something that felt almost surreal: a tropical extension of one of football’s greatest teams. In many ways, Messi’s arrival completed Beckham’s original vision. What began as a mocked transfer to a “retirement league” evolved into a club capable of attracting arguably the most famous footballer of all time.
Beckham Was Right
When Beckham first moved to America in 2007, many believed he was leaving serious football behind. In reality, he was positioning himself ahead of the future.
Today, Inter Miami stands as proof that football is no longer only about trophies or tradition. It is also about business, branding, culture, and global reach.
And while Beckham once followed football to America, the world’s biggest stars are now following him.
