A small piece of art to lighten up every morning: this small but beautiful gift will keep on giving.
Everyone knows the biggest problem with all Christmas gifts is obviously not the receiving or the giving itself. The real stress always comes from the question: what to give all the loved ones? Sometimes the smaller is actually the better. And so we came up with the following gift: a small art work that you can actually use every day.
This year, like every year since 1992, illy has created the Art Collection. This is a collaboration between the Italian coffee producer and different upcoming and established artists, curated by an art connaisseur. Over twenty-five years later, internationally famous painters, sculptors and filmmakers are still being inspired by the white canvas of the illy cup, an icon of quality coffee around the world.
This time, the collection was curated by Ralph Rugoff, curator of the Biennale Arte 2019. He invited four different artists to design the coffee cups. We will show them all below.
A sketch book turned into an art piece that could be the canvas for your everyday. Jamie used his own sketches to give us small elements that brightens up our everyday lives.
Inspired by the Memphis group and their playful use of geometry, Italian artist AD Minolti made illy coffee cups full of imagination and colour. A lovely set, we’d say.
Müller works across several media – including enamel painting, prints and rugs – to deploy a graphic and rigorous formalism that is charged with feminist and queer themes. Now, you can also drink coffee in that.
Slavs and Tartars
This group of artists started out as a book club, and gives us coffee cups with a deeper historical meaning: the arab and hebrew letters on the cups refer back to the origins of coffee itself. How is that for a starter in te morning?
Prices and availability
The illy Art Collection is now available at illy caffè’s and of course via the website. 4 espresso cups are € 66. 4 cappuccino cups are € 86.
