From Free-Kicks to Topspins: Diego Forlán’s New Career

Diego Forlán never really left competitive sport behind when he retired from football. Years after stepping away from the pitch, the former Uruguay star has turned his lifelong passion for tennis into a serious second career. In his case, his life after football still revolves around performance, discipline, and pressure.

From Free-Kick Specialist to Tennis Competitor

When Diego Forlán retired from football in 2019, he didn’t retire from competition. The former Uruguay star simply switched arenas. Over the past few years, Forlán has fully committed himself to tennis, a sport he had always loved but never had time for during his football career. What started as serious training quickly turned into real competition. Forlán now plays on the ITF World Tennis Masters Tour, taking part in official tournaments for players aged 45 and over. These matches are ranked competitions featuring experienced former athletes and lifelong tennis players.

Forlán trains regularly, often several times a week, focusing on fitness, footwork, and technique. His athletic base from football is still clearly visible. He moves well, covers the court easily, and stays strong deep into matches. In late 2024, he reached a personal milestone by making his debut at a professional ATP Challenger tournament in Montevideo, playing doubles in front of a home crowd. It was a symbolic moment. Not because he aimed to build a pro tennis career, but because it showed how seriously he takes this new chapter.

Since then, Forlán has competed in Masters tournaments across South America, reaching finals and winning matches against experienced opponents. He often speaks about how tennis gives him the same feeling football once did. Preparation, focus, pressure, and the joy of competing. There are no packed stadiums anymore, but the hunger to win remains the same.

Diego Forlán’s Legendary Football Career

Before picking up a tennis racket, Diego Forlán was known worldwide as one of football’s most dangerous shooters. His career was built on power, precision, and fearless attacking play. After early years at Manchester United, where he won the Premier League and FA Cup, Forlán truly found his rhythm in Spain. At Villarreal, he became one of Europe’s most feared strikers, winning the European Golden Shoe in 2005 as the continent’s top scorer. He repeated that achievement in 2009 with Atlético Madrid, confirming his place among the elite.

His time at Atlético Madrid produced some of the biggest moments of his career. In 2010, he played a key role in Atlético’s Europa League triumph, scoring twice in the final. Just months later, he delivered one of the greatest individual performances in World Cup history. At the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Forlán scored five goals, including long-range strikes that became instant classics. He led Uruguay to the semifinals and was awarded the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player, ahead of names like Xavi, Sneijder, and Messi.

Forlán followed that success by helping Uruguay win the Copa América in 2011, scoring twice in the final and becoming the country’s all-time top scorer at the time. With over 100 international appearances, countless decisive goals, and a reputation for thriving on the biggest stages, he left football as a national icon. Today, whether on the pitch or the tennis court, Forlán still represents the same values: professionalism, competitive drive, and a love for sport that doesn’t fade with age.
