From Bergentheim to Anfield: Arne Slot Wins Premier League in First Season

Arne Slot has done what many thought impossible — leading Liverpool to a Premier League title in his very first season. In a year full of challenges, Slot’s tactics and calm leadership brought the infamous silverware back to Anfield. The Dutch mastermind wrote his name into Liverpool’s history with a title that is more special than ever for the Reds.

Arne Slot’s Journey to Liverpool

Born in the Dutch village of Bergentheim in 1978, Arne Slot grew up in a footballing household, heavily influenced by his father, who was both a player and a coach. From a young age, Slot developed a deep understanding of the game’s tactical nuances — something that would define his future career. As a player, he operated mainly as a smart, technically gifted midfielder, spending most of his career in the Dutch leagues with clubs like PEC Zwolle, NAC Breda, and Sparta Rotterdam. Though not a superstar on the pitch, Slot was respected for his football intelligence and leadership qualities.

After hanging up his boots, he transitioned smoothly into coaching. His managerial career took off at Cambuur, where he gained attention for his innovative, attacking style. Later, at AZ Alkmaar, Slot further built his reputation by challenging the Eredivisie’s traditional powerhouses with exciting, well-organized football. However, it was at Feyenoord where he truly made history. He led the club to an Eredivisie title in 2022–23 — their first in six years — and added a KNVB Cup victory in 2023–24, restoring Feyenoord’s position at the top of Dutch football.

Known for his tactical acumen, emphasis on pressing, and bold in-game adjustments, Slot’s meteoric rise caught the eye of Liverpool’s leadership. In May 2024, after an extensive search to succeed Jürgen Klopp, the Reds appointed Arne Slot as their new head coach — a decision that would soon pay off in spectacular fashion.

A Historic Title

Arne Slot won the Premier League title clinched with four games remaining in his inaugural season at Liverpool. An impressive achievement, while adding a Champions League quarterfinal appearance, and a narrow EFL Cup final defeat.

Arne Slot’s achievement places him among a very select group of managers who have won the Premier League in their debut season. Before him, only José Mourinho (Chelsea, 2004–05), Carlo Ancelotti (Chelsea, 2009–10), Manuel Pellegrini (Manchester City, 2013–14), and Antonio Conte (Chelsea, 2016–17) managed the same feat. Slot also becomes the first Dutch manager to lift the Premier League trophy, adding another historic layer to an unforgettable season for Liverpool.

This Premier League title holds profound significance for Liverpool and its supporters. It not only matches Manchester United’s record of 20 English league titles but also marks the first time fans can truly celebrate a league victory at Anfield since 1990 — 35 years ago. Although Liverpool won the title under Jürgen Klopp in 2020, pandemic restrictions forced celebrations behind closed doors, making this triumph feel even more special. The upcoming 15km trophy parade on May 26 is anticipated to be a massive occasion, honoring the team’s incredible achievements and the city’s enduring passion for football. Slot’s success in his debut season, achieved with minimal squad changes, underscores a seamless transition and sets a promising trajectory for Liverpool’s future.
