Van der Vaart: ”It’s really fun to see how much energy everyone gets out of it”
From September 9th to 15th, Rotterdam Ahoy will host the Decathlon Premier Padel Rotterdam. To get into the spirit of the event, a VIP Padel tournament was held last Thursday featuring Remy Bonjasky, Moïse Trustfull, Kaj Gorgels, and Anouk Hoogendijk. Former professional footballer Rafael van der Vaart and former hockey player Fatima Moreira de Melo were also present as tournament directors for this major padel event. Life After Football was also invited to join in on the fun. Guests received a padel racket as a gift from title sponsor Decathlon at the start and then played against each other in a King of the Court format. The matches were fiercely competitive, as noted by Regi Blinker, founder of Life After Football. Afterwards, we had the opportunity to speak with former professional footballer and padel enthusiast Rafael van der Vaart about how his experience in top-level football is useful in padel, his enjoyment of the game, and his role as tournament director for the upcoming spectacle at Rotterdam Ahoy.
Decathlon Premier Padel Rotterdam
”The sport is already hugely popular in the Netherlands. But this really has to become the tournament. All the top players are coming this way. When you see them play, it truly deserves a full Rotterdam Ahoy. How great would it be if it’s packed and after the final, we can all say, “Wow, what have we just witnessed?”
”This tournament is about so much more than just the matches,” says Van der Vaart. ”There are all sorts of things to do; you can even play yourself, or have a drink, and enjoy some food. When you look around, it’s really awesome. There’s a great team here; Fatima and I are just the faces of it. It’s really starting now with the center court open, and it’s fantastic. Hopefully, it will be completely packed, as there are still tickets available! Come and watch because this is truly an incredible sport to see live.”
