‘Under The Tongue’: adidas celebrates 30 years of Predator

To mark the 30th anniversary of the legendary Predator football boot, adidas unveils a new edition that honours its iconic past while incorporating cutting-edge innovations that offer a glimpse into the future of football boots in 2025. To conclude the anniversary celebrations, adidas is also releasing the documentary Under The Tongue, produced in collaboration with SoccerBible.

The new Predator: A tribute to past icons

The latest Predator pays homage to the franchise’s early years. Featuring a colourway of champagne, red, and black, it references the iconic Predator Mania from 2002, while the red accents nod to the Predator Accelerator from 1998.

This boot seamlessly blends nostalgic design with advanced technology, tailored to enhance performance on the pitch. Developed with input from adidas athletes and consumers, it focuses on grip, stability, speed, and powerful strikes.

The upper offers a refined fit for extra comfort and a soft touch on the ball. Special rubber fins on the strike zones provide greater grip and precision, inspired by the legendary Predator Mania. Additionally, the laceless version ensures easy wear while delivering a snug and secure fit.

The new Predator is now available in various versions, including laced, laceless, and the classic fold-over tongue, via select adidas stores and retailers, and adidas online store.

The documentary, ‘Under the Tongue‘, delves into the Predator’s legacy, exploring its impact on football and football culture since its debut in 1994. Featuring legends such as Zinedine Zidane, David Beckham, and Jude Bellingham, the film provides a behind-the-scenes look at the development of a boot that revolutionised the game.

Zinedine Zidane shares his perspective on the exclusivity of the boot

“You needed to be good, and you needed to have been chosen by adidas… So yes, I would say some players were envious. Especially when they saw the boots we were being sent. You can imagine when we wore them the first time for training. Ultimately, they made the right choice because I recognise myself in this boot in every way. I feel very lucky to have worn this boot for so many years. They chose me, but I’m the one who wore them. I did some amazing things in them.”

David Beckham reflects on the importance of the Predator throughout his career

“We all go on certain journeys; everything has to evolve. But it has to keep that DNA. The 30-year history, every special moment. Every special goal. Every special cross. Every club that I played for; I’ve been wearing a Predator boot. It doesn’t matter whether it’s the first, the last, the most difficult, the easiest – they all mean the same thing.”

Jude Bellingham talks about the influence of players like Zidane and Beckham

“The players who wore the boot were so classy and so iconic. I watched some of my favourite players wear them growing up. Zidane – it’s the movements with the ball, it’s the skills and the creative way of getting out of situations. With Beckham, it was probably more the accuracy from a ball-striking point of view. So, I kind of try and pick from everything I see, and it’s kind of merged the player that I am. I’m so grateful for the role models those two have been.”
