Trevoh Chalobah: How Sierra Leone and London shaped one of the world’s most stylish footballers

The 25-year-old Trevoh Chalobah was born in Sierra Leone and moved to London at the age of 2. His football talent was spotted early on and he joined Chelsea’s academy six years after moving to the United Kingdom. His country of birth, however, has had a lot of influence on his life and his football career. ‘’I would say it’s a humbling upbringing that I had and I get that for my country,’’ Chalobah told NSS Sports.

‘’Where I’m from there are a lot of hard workers there and taking that from there to here is something that will always be rooted in and I’m able to take that role in my life and in my career,’’ says the Crystal Palace defender. He loves the Sierra Leonean beaches and the food, but his faith also shaped him. ‘’I’m from Krio ethnic group, a lot of Christians are from there as well [30% of the population ed]. So my faith is very important to me.’’

Ultimately, Chalobah moved to London with his family because there were more opportunities and better education. This is also where he had his first taste of football. Growing up in the British capital also showed him a very different lifestyle that has had a massive influence on his personal style. Earlier this year, Trevoh Chalobah also earned a spot on our list of most fashionable footballers in the Premier League. ‘’With London, the lifestyle, the city itself is one of the greatest in the world. Growing up to be a Southeast London boy, it was all about style, football, and yeah, just to have that cool look.’’

Fashion

‘’I’ve always liked fashion,’’ says Chalobah to NSS Sports. ”And I said, it’s a big thing when you move to London. Growing up in South East London, it’s a lot about fashion, about being the best and looking cool. And for me, it’s all about looking different.’’

‘’I think the upcoming younger ballers right now are very focused on the image. Fashion is your personality, it is who you are as a person, not just on the pitch but also off the pitch. You can see a lot of brands now doing collaborations with a lot of football teams and they see how big football is now. They can obviously promote their brand and collaborate well. I think it’s only going to get bigger.’’
