Throwback: Ian Wright’s first ever goal for Arsenal
Ian Wright’s first Arsenal goal was scored 28 years ago this week.
On September 25th 1991, a young English striker recently signed for the grand fee of £2.5 million ran out for The Gunners, wearing that iconic ‘bruised banana’ kit. There was a lot of pressure on the debutant, what with that transfer fee then being a club record for Arsenal.
But the former Crystal Palace man took a big step to repaying the money even in his first game. An obscure goal in many ways, Ian Wright seems to catch the goalkeeper off guard as he shoots off-balance. Curling it into the far corner and making the net bulge, Ian Wright would go on to repeat this feat more times than anyone else before him.

He became Arsenal’s all-time record goalscorer later that decade, scoring 185 goals in 288 appearances. The first of which was right here in 1991. He actually went on to score a hat-trick in this game, setting the tone for his extraordinary Arsenal career. Drink it in.
