Throwback: Cristiano Ronaldo scores first goal for Real Madrid

On this day in 2009, Cristiano Ronaldo scored his first-ever goal for Real Madrid.

It was a time when his £80 million transfer fee was a world-record, as his contract and prowess exchanged hands from Manchester United to Real Madrid. The move of the century in many ways, it was the pinnacle of Madrid’s summer spending that year and marked the start of a new era for Los Blancos.

CR7, who initially wore number 9 for the club, would go on to become Real Madrid’s all-time record goalscorer. 450 goals came from just 438 appearances, as the Portugal international changed the very face of goal scoring alongside Lionel Messi. Cristiano would have to wait a little while for a trophy, before winning four Champions League titles from 2014 until his departure to Juventus in 2018.

But he did not have to wait very long for a goal as, on August 29th 2009, he headed home a corner for his first goal in the white shirt of Real Madrid.

Deportivo were the side on the wrong end of Ronaldo’s first Real Madrid milestone and they, as well as the rest of La Liga, would be Ronaldo’s victims for most of the next decade. CR7 became one of the greatest players to ever represent the Spanish giants and it all started here with a humble header.
