Throwback: 5 of Dennis Bergkamp’s best Arsenal goals…

On this day in 1995, Dennis Bergkamp officially became an Arsenal player.

Moving from Inter Milan to North London for a fee of £7.5 million, there a sense of huge intrigue around the Dutchman’s arrival. Foreign imports were still a rarity in the then Premiership and Bergkamp was seen as the man to lead ‘Boring Arsenal’ into a new era.

It’s safe to say he did that, scoring some stunning goals along the way. Here are Dennis Bergkamp’s best goals for Arsenal…

5. Bergkamp vs Bolton, 1996

In 1996, still in his first season at Highbury, Bolton Wanderers taught everyone a valuable lesson. Don’t let Arsenal’s new number 10 have any space around the edge of the box.

4. Bergkamp vs Southampton, 1995

Before Bolton, Southampton had learned that Bergkamp will do pretty much whatever he wants if given the chance.

Having just opened his account for Arsenal with a gorgeous volley, Bergkamp later dribbled in the Highbury sun until close enough to pull the trigger once more. And then… goal.

3. Bergkamp vs Sunderland, 1997

In an cold FA Cup game up in Sunderland, Bergkamp warmed everyone up with a moment of pure fire.

Dragging the ball away from a defender, he whips this one into the back of the net with zero backlift and celebrates with his hand over his mouth. His teammates and thousands in the stadium do the same.

2. Bergkamp vs Leicester City, 1997

It was a summer’s evening when Bergkamp plucked the ball out of te air in his opponent’s box, before touching it once more past his marker and applying the finish to one of the best technical goals in Premiership/Premier League history.

Oh, and this completed his hat-trick that night and won the Gunners the game.
