These 5 NFL players own football clubs

Even though people in the United States and the rest of the world like to argue about what is the ‘’real football’’, these NFL players have shown their love for the sport. From Tom Brady to Patrick Mahomes, these five American football players own football clubs.

NFL players who own football clubs

1. Tom Brady – Birmingham City

Tom Brady, arguably the best quarterback of all time, surprised the world of football when he became a part-owner of the English football club Birmingham City in 2023. The seven-time Super Bowl champion, however, only owns a very little share (3,3%) according to The New York Times. In an official statement on the club’s website, Tom Brady noted his ambition to create the same success he’s had as a professional athlete at Birmingham City. He’s also a Chairman of the Advisory Board of the club.

2. JJ Watt – Burnley FC

The three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, JJ Watt, became a part-owner of Burnley FC in 2023. He invests in the club together with his wife Kealia Watt, who is a former US Women’s National Team international who played for the Chicago Red Stars and Houston Dash. In an official statement, the couple stated that they wanted to elevate the club’s global profile, whilst also respecting the history. ‘’When you invest in a club that’s been around since 1882, you must have great respect for its history and tradition. We understand that not only are we investing in the squad and manager, we’re investing in the town and its people. We take that responsibility very seriously and intend to work hard in earning their trust and support.’’

3. Patrick Mahomes – Sporting Kansas City and Kansas City Current

The three-time Super Bowl champion Patrick Mahomes is not only the star player of the NFL, but also the co-owner of Sporting Kansas City (MLS) and Kansas City Current (NWSL). The quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs joined the ownership group together with his wife Brittany in 2022 and became the first active NFL player to have equity in an NWSL team. Mahomes is also a minority shareholder of MLB side Kansas City Royals and the Alpine F1 team.

4. Russell Wilson – Seattle Sounders

NFL quarterback Russell Wilson became a minority owner of the Seattle Sounders together with his wife and singer Ciara in 2019. The same year, the MLS club also won their second MLS Cup. By joining the ownership group of Seattle Sounders, the one-time Super Bowl champions became part of one of the most valuable football clubs in the United States.

5. Mark Ingram II – D.C. United

The three-time NFL Pro Bowl running back Mark Ingram II joined the ownership group of D.C. United in 2021. The former NFL player is playing an active role in the ownership group as he aims to help the club compete for major trophies. ‘’I am excited about the recent investments the club has made to build towards a sustainable future and the decisions they have taken at the leadership level both on and off the pitch,’’ Ingram II said in an official statement on the club’s website.
