Player of the Weekend: Vivianne Miedema

There was plenty of football played this weekend but our standout player was still an easy choice, as Vivianne Miedema became the all-time leading goalscorer of Dutch women’s football.

Still only 22, the Arsenal forward has surpassed all others in just 77 caps, scoring 60 goals for the Dutch Lionesses. Her record-breaking goal came this weekend as the Netherlands sealed their passage to the last 16 of the World Cup, with a 3-1 win over Cameroon.

They were made to work hard for their victory as, despite going one-nil up just before time with Miedema’s record-leveling first goal of the game, they were quickly pegged back by Onguene down the other end. But once another Arsenal player, Dominique Bloodworth had put the Oranje back ahead, it felt like we were waiting for the Dutch star striker to break the record.

And she did so in style on 85 minutes, biding her time as she entered the box and powering home her finish. The traveling Dutch supporters erupted for their hero who, at 22, will surely fire home plenty more goals for her country. Congratulations, Vivianne!
