International tournaments are the perfect setting for heroes to be made and this weekend, Riyad Mahrez was the man of the moment as his last-minute free-kick put Algeria into the AFCON Final.
The Manchester City winger has had a phenomenal rise to the top, being a key part of that ’that’ Leicester City side that won the Premier League. It was the last kick of the game, with the allocated injury time already finished. A deserved victory, Algeria had edged the match without finding the clinical strike up until the scene was so finely set for their star player. As the celebrations have shown, not just on the pitch in Egypt but back in the likes of Paris and Marseilles, too, where there are large Algerian populations, this was truly a special footballing moment.
With considerations to the beaten Super Eagles, Riyad Mahrez is our Player of the Weekend.
