Player of the Weekend: Megan Rapinoe
This weekend everyone’s suspicions were confirmed… this was Megan Rapinoe’s World Cup.
The USA co-captain has been on fine form on and off the pitch, speaking out against Donald Trump, representing the LGBTQ+ community during Pride month and beyond it and now, finishing the tournament as the Golden Boot winner, Golden Ball winner and above all, a World Cup winner.

Such a haul of accolades has rarely been seen from an individual at a World Cup and it’s easy to forget that the 34-year-old has had doubts around her fitness this summer. Putting in a fine performance in the final against the Netherlands, the left-winger’s experience at this level showed, as well as her quality.
Winning the tournament felt like the minimum expectation for the United States, even with quality opposition in their way like the French hosts, England and the beaten finalists. But even with that immense pressure, Rapinoe and her team have surpassed expectations. For her individual performance and more, she is a worthy Player of the Weekend.
