Player of the Weekend: Evert Linthorst

There was a shock in the Eredivisie this weekend as VVV Venlo dispatched of FC Utrecht on their own ground.

The hero was their 19-year-old midfielder Evert Linthorst, who is our Player of the Weekend after his impressive brace in the first half. In beaming sunshine, the teenager jumped highest to bravely head his side into the lead in the 37th minute. Then scoring his second goal of the season and the second goal of his Eredivisie career, he showed real initiative to put his side on track to a hard-fought win.

But of course, Utrecht were always going to come back inspired, trying to save face in front of their own fans. But after riding the short storm, VVV found their opponents to be wide open once again and Linthorst doubled his tally. This time meeting a cross with his left foot, he skilfully aimed the ball to the far corner of the net, beyond Maarten Paes in the Utrecht goal.

VVV Venlo held on for their win and even introduced new signing Lee Cattermole from the bench for his debut. The former Premier League midfielder marked it typically with a yellow card. But even with the new player taking the field, the spotlight was very much on VVV Venlo’s in-form teenager and our Player of the Weekend.
