Player of the Weekend: Donyell Malen

Some people think that the international break gets in the way of good times. But those people clearly don’t support the Netherlands.

The Dutch Lions put in a heroic performance on Friday evening to beat Germany, in their own backyard, for the first time in 17 years. A timely victory following the release of our new issue, celebrating Dutch football culture and more. Amongst the many stand out performers on the pitch like Gini Wijnaldum, Ryan Babel and Frenkie de Jong, there was a dream debut for Donyell Malen.

The PSV forward is our Player of the Weekend, being given the chance to impress on this, the highest stage of all, and more than taking his opportunity. The 20-year-old made the difference when this rollercoaster match was finely poised, applying a composed finish to a devastating counter-attack.

A product of the Arsenal academy, the Dutchman left London in 2017 to return to his home country with PSV. His rise to the international team has gone a little under the radar outside of the country, but having scored the third, famous goal of this 4-2 win, many know his name now.

A wonderful weekend for Dutch football and a memorable one for Donyell Malen, our Player of the Weekend.
