Player of the Weekend: Ansu Fati
Barcelona’s 16-year-old wonderkid is our Player of the Weekend, after Ansu Fati scored and assisted during his first full start for the Catalan giants.
At 16 years at 318 days, Fati became the youngest ever La Masia graduate to start a game at Camp Nou, filling in for none other than an injured Lionel Messi. Big boots to fill, then.
Having scored before the international break, all eyes were on the youngster as he timed his run superbly to latch on to Frenkie de Jong’s pass in the second minute of the game. Applying the finish himself, it was the perfect way to calm any pre-match nerves that this apparently fearless 16-year-old Barcelona player may or may not have had.
He then returned the favour for De Jong, assisting the Dutchman as FC Barcelona began to run riot in an enthralling 5-2 win against Valencia. Spain and Guinea-Bissau are said to be in a tug-of-war for his international future and Barcelona have already put down a 100 million euros buy-out clause in Fati’s contract.
