Player of the Weekend: 11th February
Not for the first time in his career and surely not the last time in it either, Sergio Aguero was the standout performer of the weekend.
The title race is well and truly on in the Premier League and, what with Liverpool having already won 24 hours before Manchester City welcomed Chelsea to the Etihad, the pressure was on the sky blues to match their rivals in red. And, within just a few minutes, it was clear that they were going to do just that.
Raheem Sterling opened the scoring for City and they tormented Chelsea all-game from that point on. The man at the centre of it all was Sergio Aguero. City’s record-breaking goalscorer was actually the subject of one of the misses of his career moments before he netted his first goal, mishitting a tap-in from 2 or 3 yards out before hammering in a 25-yarder – the goal of the match.
More typical Agueroness followed, as another good finish and an inhumanly calm penalty sealed a hat-trick for the Argentine forward. A 6-0 win for City over Chelsea has caused big questions to be asked about Mauricio Sarri and his side, but few can deny the quality of the home side and their star man in particular.
This treble meant Aguero equalled Alan Shearer’s record of 11 Premier League hat-tricks and that he eventually, picked up the match ball for keeps.
