Player of the Weekend

It is not just league titles that are beginning to get lifted at this point in the season, there are individual awards being handed out too.

And whilst we are no closer to finding out who will be lifting the Premier League title come the end of the season, the best player in that particular league has just been announced. And it’s the Dutchman, Virgil van Dijk.

The first defender to win the prestigious prize in over a decade, Liverpool’s centre-back has been named the PFA Player of the Year during his first full season at the club. The Reds are still in the title race with just two games to go, trailing Manchester City by one point.

Liverpool have lost only one game this season and Van Dijk has been pivotal in that, leading the defence with nothing but coolness and composure, helping Klopp’s side keep 20 Premier League clean sheets. He has also chipped in with some vital goals and been a mainstay in the team all season, even captaining the side on occasion.

With two league games left and a Champions League semi-final to play, this could be just one of a few trophies that Van Dijk lifts come the end of the season. For his acknowledgement of a wonderful season up to this point though, Virgil is our Player of the Weekend.
