5 of the best Premier League opening day goals…
With the Premier League season starting this weekend, we wanted to take a trip down memory lane with a few YouTube URLs, and give you five of the best goals ever scored on the English top flight’s opening weekend.
Freshly cut grass and some August sunshine make these strikes all the better, as legends like Beckham and Shearer start off their own respective seasons in perfect style amongst the goals on our list. Those two, a couple of Stamford Bridge volleys and a stunner from Sadio Mane complete our top 5…
Mario Stanic vs West Ham, 2000
Seeing a new signing in action is always intriguing for a football fan, so imagine how Chelsea supporters felt when the newly arrived Mario Stanic showed and did this on his debut.
David Beckham vs Wimbledon, 1996
In one of the defining moments of David Beckham’s young career, the then Manchester United number 10, made everyone know exactly who he was with one strike of the ball.
Yet to even play for England yet, the young midfielder scored the goal of the 1996/97 season on the first day of it.
Gustavo Poyet vs Sunderland 1999
Back to Stamford Bridge for another volley and Chelsea were running rampant against poor Sunderland on the opening day of the 1999/00 season.
Poyet and Zola had already got a goal each by this point, when the Italian maestro scooped the ball perfectly over the defence for the incoming Poyet, who scissor-kicked his name into Premier League opening day history.
Alan Shearer vs Crystal Palace, 1992
Speaking of Premier League history, no player has scored more goals in the division than Alan Shearer.
Yet, back in 1992, newspapers had him down as a potentially overpriced young striker, having just broken a British transfer record in moving from Southampton to Blackburn for £3.6 million. What better way to start repaying that fee than by doing this on your debut?
Stan Collymore vs Sunderland, 1995
Again, when a new season starts, new signings do, too.
As Robbie Fowler watched on from the bench, Stan Collymore, then Liverpool’s record signing, twists, turns and terrifically puts the ball into the Anfield net.
