Indonesia’s star Thom Haye: ‘’I like to push the boundaries with the clothes I wear’’

After making his international debut for Indonesia earlier this year, Thom Haye has made a huge impression on the country that is trying to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. In 2022, the footballer of Dutch side Almere City was nominated for Life After Football’s Fashion Player Awards. He may have not won the award, but his interview and fashionable clothing style made a lasting impression. With our Fashion Player Award 2024 around the corner, it’s the perfect time to bring back Thom Haye’s interview of 2022.

How would you describe your clothing style?

“ I really like a combination of classic and plain. I’m not much into colours. I used to like streetwear, but I’ve moved away from that. I love the Scandinavian style, the oversized look. I try to experiment with that. I also like to push the boundaries sometimes. I feel like many people dress the same, very mainstream. So it’s fun to try something different.’’

Who do you think is the most fashionable footballer of all time?

‘’Héctor Bellerín is currently a name you often hear when it comes to fashion. He’s someone who does his own thing. His style is a bit retro. I think it’s cool when someone does what they like and expresses themselves through their clothing. David Beckham is also an icon, still to this day despite being retired for years. It’s also his whole vibe and lifestyle that makes him who he is.’’

What makes an outfit complete for you?

‘’That can vary. Sometimes it’s nice to keep an outfit simple and let the sneakers do the talking. But recently I also spent some extra effort on a watch or necklace. I often wear a bracelet with my name on it. A friend of mine, who started his own clothing line, had one made for me.’’

What do you consider real no-gos?

‘’I’ve completely moved away from skinny jeans. Those are just a thing of the past. Skinny jeans are really over. Or Jordans – I still think they’re nice, but only styled in a certain way. If you pair them with skinny jeans it is a definite no-go. But I do keep a lot of clothes because old-school styles can become trendy again. That’s the fun thing about fashion.’’

Which designer would you like to have design something for you?

‘’I think the combination between streetwear and classic is very cool and Rhude nails that combination. It’s a brand that has really risen in the last few years.’’
