I was interested in sneakers before, but in America it’s on another level. That’s where I really started expanding my collection.”

Like many footballers with an interest in fashion, Room traces his inspiration back to one player. “I think it all started with David Beckham. He was one of the first footballers to truly combine football and fashion. When I was younger, I looked up to him a lot. Even today, he’s still a style icon.” Fashion is a regular topic in the dressing room as well. Players often rate each other’s outfits, exchange compliments and discuss trends. “There are a lot of guys who dress well. Marco van Ginkel and Melle Meulensteen both have a really strong personal style. We always talk about fashion and give each other feedback.”

I certainly didn’t expect to get it.” During the match, however, something unexpected happened. “I made quite a few saves and there was a lot of interaction during the game. He was chasing his 100th international goal and I kept stopping him.” After the final whistle, the Argentine superstar approached Room and handed over his shirt.
“I was already happy with that, but then he asked for my shirt as well. I was surprised. To get that kind of recognition from someone like Messi is very special.” For many players, a shirt exchange is simply a souvenir. For Room, it represented something bigger: respect from one of the greatest footballers of all time. Today, that Messi shirt shares space with another memory that may prove even more significant.
