Edson Álvarez: ”I spent all my money on them. It felt like a reward for my first successes as a footballer.”
Edson Álvarez is heading into a busy summer and has caught the eye of several clubs, including Borussia Dortmund. Back in 2020, ‘El Machín’ was still playing for Ajax, and as one of the team’s standout players, the midfielder was nominated for the prestigious Life After Football Fashion Player Award. In front of our cameras, the tough-as-nails Mexican shared his thoughts on fashion, his favorite items, and his style icons.

What’s your favorite piece of clothing?
Edson Álvarez: “I really love bomber jackets and oversized shirts. I think they suit me well. I’m quite tall, so skinny items don’t really work for me. A bomber jacket is a shorter piece, and when I wear it over an oversized shirt, I think it looks really good. I’m also crazy about sneakers – I love buying them. I’ve already built up a pretty serious collection.”
Do you have any favorite brands?
“It depends a bit on the occasion. For more casual days, I really like wearing Palm Angels. But if there’s a special event where I need to wear something a bit more dressed-up, I usually go for Dior Homme.”
Do you have any fashion icons?
“I love Memphis Depay’s style. There’s a boldness to his fashion choices that I really admire. Other than that, I mostly try to follow my own ideas, and I take a lot of inspiration from the people around me. Honestly, I can find inspiration in anyone.”
Who do you think is the most fashionable footballer of all time?
“David Beckham, of course. He was – and still is – truly his own brand.”
Do you have a favorite clothing store?
“I love shopping at FOUR Amsterdam, and 1 Amsterdam is another favorite. And sometimes, it’s just nice to stroll down P.C. Hooftstraat and shop there too. Amsterdam has a lot of great stores. Unlike a lot of guys, I actually really enjoy shopping.”
I keep those shoes in perfect condition, mainly so I can look at them from time to time and remind myself where I came from.
How would you describe your style?
“Hmm, good question. I’d say I’m mostly into streetwear. Like I mentioned, I love wearing oversized pieces, which naturally gives off a casual vibe.”
Tracksuit or suit?
“I’d have to go with a tracksuit – a sportier look. Of course, I do enjoy wearing a suit for special occasions, and I like making the effort when the time calls for it. I like suits, but they’re just not really me.”
What was the first expensive piece of clothing you ever bought?
“I remember it really well. I was on vacation in Los Angeles and bought a pair of Gucci sneakers. I spent all my money on them, haha. But I just had to have them. It felt like a reward for my first successes as a footballer. I still have them. They’re timeless classics – I’ve taken good care of them and still wear them now and then. But mainly, I keep them in perfect condition so I can look at them once in a while and remind myself where I came from.”
