Cruijff Docuseries Set for Record-Breaking Premiere at Johan Cruijff ArenA

After nearly a decade since his passing, Johan Cruijff’s legacy is set to take the global stage once again. The upcoming Cruijff docuseries promises an unprecedented look into the mind, influence, and enduring impact of the Dutch icon. With a world premiere in the Johan Cruijff ArenA, it’s shaping up to be one of football’s most emotional and historic tributes.

Cruijff Docuseries
A Historic Tribute

On 21 March 2026, the Johan Cruijff ArenA will host the world premiere of Cruijff, a four-part documentary celebrating the man who transformed football forever. Organised by Lusus and SportVibes in collaboration with the Cruijff family, the screening aims to break a Guinness World Record as the largest documentary premiere ever, with more than 50,000 fans expected to attend.

The event will showcase the first two episodes, each around 45 minutes long, presented as two halves of an unforgettable football match. Beyond the scale, it’s a symbolic moment: a tribute to the man who changed the game, and through it, changed the world.

Untold Stories

Produced by Lusus in partnership with Oscar-winning filmmaker James Gay-Rees, the Cruijff docuseries reveals rare and unseen material. The skilled filmmaker is known for famous documentaries like Senna, Maradona, and Drive to Survive.

The Cruijff series features never-before-seen family footage, exclusive audio recordings in which Cruijff narrates his life story shortly before his passing, and the first-ever in-depth interviews with his family, close friends, and football icons who knew him best. The result is a deeply personal portrait of the man whose ideas reshaped the world of sport.

The Philosophy Lives On

Cruijff’s influence extends far beyond his playing days. He shaped the modern identities of Ajax and FC Barcelona, laying the tactical foundations that inspired clubs like Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain. His footballing philosophy values, intelligence, creativity, and freedom, continues through the generations, from Marco van Basten all the way to Frenkie de Jong.

As Jordi Cruijff explains, “It’s special that we can make this almost ten years after his passing, with the full support of our family. My father always believed his ideas went beyond the pitch, and this series immortalises that.”

When and Where to Watch

The Cruijff docuseries premieres on Saturday, 21 March 2026, in the Johan Cruijff ArenA, followed by its national broadcast on Sunday, 22 March 2026 at 20:30 on NPO 1.
