Cruijff Documentary World Premiere Fills the Johan Cruijff ArenA

The Cruijff documentary world premiere turned the Johan Cruijff ArenA into a tribute to one of football’s most enduring figures on Saturday, March 21, 2026. The four-part documentary series ‘CRUIJFF’ had its world premiere in Amsterdam, ten years after Johan Cruyff’s passing. With more than 40,000 visitors inside the stadium for the live screening, the first two episodes were shown to the audience.

A Stadium-Sized Tribute

This was never going to feel like a standard premiere. The scale alone gave the evening a different kind of weight. Inside the Johan Cruijff ArenA, 14 screens with a combined surface of 852 square metres transformed the stadium into a huge open-air cinema setting. The first two episodes were shown in two 45-minute parts, echoing the rhythm of a football match. The programme began with a live Q&A featuring Jordi Cruijff, Ronald Koeman and Ruud Gullit, hosted by Hélène Hendriks. After, the programme moved into an opening show on the pitch and then the documentary itself. A personal tribute from Peter Heerschop was also part of the opening block.

That structure gave the night something more than a television launch. It felt built as a live football tribute first and a documentary premiere second. Even the break between the episodes was programmed as part of the evening. It made the whole event feel more ceremonial than routine.

What the First Episodes Seemed to Set Up

What gives this series its real pull is that it is not positioned simply as another football documentary. The NTR presents ‘CRUIJFF’ as a deep portrait of the man, the legend and his lasting legacy, and the material behind it immediately explains why the series carries that weight. For the first time, the Cruyff family participated on their own initiative in a documentary about Johan Cruyff’s life. The Cruyff family opened up the family archive and allowing personal recordings and rare footage into the story. That includes intimate audiotapes recorded shortly before his death, alongside images that had rarely or never been shown before.

That framing already says a lot about the tone of the episodes shown on the night. Rather than only revisiting the familiar public image of Cruyff the football icon, the series is built to move from his youth in Betondorp to his status as a global figure, with room for his choices, doubts and more personal moments. That makes the documentary feel broader than a career recap. It is clearly trying to get closer to the person behind the philosophy and the legend.

A Premiere with Football Royalty in the Room

The guest list also underlined how wide Cruyff’s influence still reaches. Dutch football legends including Patrick Kluivert, Frank Rijkaard, Ruud Gullit, Edwin van der Sar and Ronald Koeman were present. Also Joan Laporta, president of FC Barcelona, was there, as were former teammates and familiar figures from Cruyff’s football world. Ajax Amsterdam legend Sjaak Swart attended the premiere as well, a reminder of how strongly the evening was rooted not only in image and memory, but in living history. Jordi, Danny, Chantal and Susila Cruijff all feature in the documentary, which adds another layer to the sense that this was not just a public homage, but also a very personal family project.

That is part of what made the event feel bigger than nostalgia. Cruyff’s name still connects Amsterdam and Barcelona, family and football culture, the past and the present. Laporta’s presence at the premiere reflected that international dimension, just as the stadium setting reflected the scale of Cruyff’s status in Dutch football.

Why this Project Feels Bigger than One Night

There is also serious production weight behind the series. ‘CRUIJFF’ was produced by Lusus together with Box To Box Films and Tucan Entertainment. Box To Box brings the kind of documentary pedigree associated with titles such as Senna, Maradona and Drive to Survive. The official presentation of the project also makes clear that this was designed as an international production, not a small domestic retrospective.

That larger ambition fits the subject. The official event materials frame Cruyff not just as an Ajax and Barcelona great, but as a figure whose football ideas still echo through clubs and players long after his death. Whether you look at Ajax, Barcelona or the broader influence of positional play and football philosophy, this is the kind of legacy that naturally lends itself to a project made on a bigger scale.

From the ArenA to Everyone Else

The premiere also worked because it was not sealed off as a one-off live event. The first episode aired on NPO 1 on Sunday, March 22, 2026. The four episodes are being rolled out across four Sundays, with the full series also available on NPO Start. That gives the stadium premiere a second life straight away. One night in the ArenA, then a national audience from the next evening onward.

Nearly a decade after his death, Johan Cruyff once again became the centre of a football moment. One that felt bigger than the pitch itself. In Amsterdam, the Cruijff documentary world premiere did exactly what a tribute like this should do. It matched the scale of the name, while making room for something more intimate underneath it.
