Calvin Verdonk: Grounded in the Game

From NEC Nijmegen to the Indonesian national team, Calvin Verdonk plays football with a quiet strength that reflects who he is — grounded, loyal, and committed. In this interview with Life After Football, he opens up about his family, mindset, and what keeps him anchored both on and off the pitch.

Getting to Know Calvin

I’m a pretty simple guy,” Calvin says with a smile. When he’s not training, he enjoys down time on the PlayStation, usually playing Call of Duty with NEC teammate Philippe Sandler. “It helps me switch off.”

Describing himself in three words, Calvin goes for humble, funny, and loyal. His footballing inspiration? Cristiano Ronaldo. “His discipline and work ethic really motivate me.

Family First

One of the strongest influences in Calvin’s life is his family — especially his older brother. “We grew up doing everything together — always outside, always active. That connection is still strong.”

Their bond goes beyond football. While Calvin pursued football, his brother focused on kickboxing. “We trained together at the kickboxing gym. I even had a match once — and I won! It’s great for fitness and mental strength.”

They still talk every day. “He always checks in before matches to ask how I’m feeling. That means a lot.”

Football as Joy

For Calvin, the game remains fun above all. “I try to keep football like it was when I was a kid. I don’t see it as pressure — it’s something I love. That mindset keeps me grounded.”

His journey with NEC has felt like a turning point. “NEC gives me confidence. I feel trusted by the coach and staff — it really feels like home.” One of his best memories? “Winning the KNVB Cup semi-final last year. Even though we lost the final, that win and finishing sixth in the league were special.”

Staying Grounded

Despite the demands of professional football, Calvin doesn’t feel much pressure. “Before a match, I get a few nerves — but it’s a good kind. My daughter and my family keep me calm.”

His mindset is shaped by experience.

Setbacks taught me to stay close to myself and the people around me. I’ve learned to reflect, but also to move on — you can’t dwell on every mistake.

Representing Indonesia

Representing the Indonesian national team is something Calvin doesn’t take lightly. “It means everything. The passion of the fans fits the way I play. Watching on TV doesn’t compare to being there. When the anthem plays and the crowd sings, it’s emotional. You can’t really describe that energy, you can only feel it. When I play for the Indonesian national team I really feel like I’m part of something special.”

His favourite moment? “Beating Saudi Arabia at home. Our fans were pushing us and we played so well. That match was huge for us.”

Team life is a mix of focus and fun. “We’re a young squad. There’s a lot of laughter, but we know when to get serious. Off the pitch, we hang out on the hotel rooftop, play cards, just relax.”

Now, as a role model for young players in Indonesia, he hopes to give back. “A lot of us in the national team came from nothing. I want kids to see that their dreams are possible too.”

Final Word

Calvin Verdonk plays with heart, but never lets the moment get too big. His story is about staying true to what matters — family, perspective, and love for the game. As he puts it: “Stay grounded and keep going.”
