The documentary follows the final two seasons of Pep Guardiola’s tenure as Manchester City manager from 2024 to 2026. Coming off winning the English Premier League four years in a row, the 2024/2025 season ended as one of the worst seasons, performance-wise, for a formidable City team, built by Pep Guardiola since the 2016/2017 season. Injuries piled up, results dipped, and for the first time in years, City looked beatable. It was not the ending anyone expected, least of all Guardiola himself.
“In life, whatever you do, do it with passion. I don’t want good players; I want players with passion,” Guardiola says early in the documentary. It is a line that sums up everything that follows, on the pitch and off it.

It is the same word he uses to describe what he wants from his players. He wants players who play with passion, and he used something so vulnerable to get that message across. Coming from a man who often has to be the calmest in the room, it’s not the kind of admission you’d expect, yet it’s exactly the kind of thing any of us might say about a relationship that quietly ran its course. That is the point. Behind the trophies, Guardiola is working through the same things everyone else is.
That is perhaps the real obsession the documentary’s title refers to. Not just Guardiola’s pursuit of trophies, but his refusal to do anything, whether coaching a Champions League final or ending a marriage, without meaning it completely. Football gave us the passion. This documentary finally shows us the person behind it.
