As May turns into June, we can expect the football news to start filling up with transfer stories every day.
Forged thanks to a mix of genuine transfer interest and a need to fill the football news quota even when the players are all away on their holidays, transfer rumours are part and parcel of the summer for any football fan. And more often than not, there is always a handful of transfers that seem to take a summer’s worth of newspapers to eventually get over the line.
Think Paul Pogba in 2016 or Neymar in 2017, rumoured transfers that went on and on and on. Well, as he kick-off the transfer season, here are 5 transfer sagas to expect in the forthcoming months…
Eden Hazard to Real Madrid?
It really wouldn’t be a transfer window without Real Madrid making the headlines.
Los Blancos are looking to recruit in a big way this summer, thanks to a poor performance last season. With Ronaldo now long-gone, his goals are yet to be replaced and Eden Hazard, with time running out on his deal at Chelsea, looks like a perfect fit to be the next Galactico.
Questions have been thrown at Hazard already, with the Belgian very coy on his future until this point. Chelsea play Arsenal in the Europa League Final this week, but expect this story to intensify almost instantly after the final whistle blows in Baku.
Matthijs de Ligt to leave Ajax?
This is another transfer rumour that was rumbling throughout the back-end of the season, as Ajax’s inspirational teenage captain found himself in the limelight during their Champions League heroics.
With Frenkie de Jong having already agreed to join FC Barcelona, the La Liga champions are the favourites to snap up Matthijs de Ligt, too. However, with interest from just about every club in Europe, and reported offers from the Premier League, the ball is very much at De Ligt’s feet.
Kylian Mbappe to leave PSG?
Amother young starlet in high demand in Kylian Mbappe.
The Frenchman has been the subject of transfer rumours almost every summer of his short career so far, and off the back of his best season to date, there is debate over whether PSG is the perfect fit for him. Real Madrid are, of course, at the front of the queue for the World Cup winning striker and it seems unlikely that any other club in the world would suit him – and his wage demands – more than Los Blancos.
Antoine Griezmann to FC Barcelona?
It seems like Real Madrid and Barcelona dominate every transfer window but that is testament to the lure of the two El Classico sides.
Another World Cup winner, Antoine Griezmann, has publicly announced his intention to leave Atletico Madrid this summer and it seems that Barca are the favourites to get his signature, too. A move to Real from Atletico would ruin his legacy at his current club and there are rumblings about doubt in Phillipe Coutinho’s ability to support Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez enough – so will Griezmann move to Barcelona?
Arjen Robben to PSV?
Every year there is always at least one romantic transfer story and could it be Arjen Robben this year?
The legendary winger has said goodbye to Bayern Munich after a trophy-laden spell in Bavaria came to an emotional, Bundesliga title winning end. There is interest in the Dutchman from across the world, as MLS clubs, Chinese clubs and even Leicester City have been linked with the former PSV man.
However, in amongst the possible suitors is the Eindhoven club, as they hope to welcome back one of their favourite sons.
